BASEBALL

Montreal Expos -- Signed pitcher Donnie Bridges, their first-round pick in the June draft, and assigned him to their team in the Gulf Coast League (Rookie); optioned pitcher Omar Daal to Ottawa of the International League (AAA); designated pitcher Salomon Torres for assignment; recalled infielder Jose Vidro and pitcher Steve Falteisek from Ottawa.

Oakland Athletics -- Placed catcher George Williams on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right bicep; optioned pitcher Tim Kubinski to Edmonton of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); recalled catcher Izzy Molina and outfielder Ernie Young from Edmonton.

Seattle Mariners -- Optioned pitcher Derek Lowe to Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Cedar Rapids Kernels (Midwest League/A) -- Activated pitcher Danny Greene from the disabled list.

Kane County Cougars (Midwest League/A) -- Placed center fielder Julio Ramirez on the disabled list.

FOOTBALL

Detroit Lions -- Signed running back Barry Sanders to a five-year contract extension with an option for a sixth year.

New York Jets -- Signed linebacker James Farrior, their first round pick in the 1997 draft, to a five-year contract.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Signed wide receiver Reidel Anthony, one of their first-round picks, to a six-year contract; signed free agent cornerback Anthony Parker, who had been with the St. Louis Rams, to a three-year contract.

SOCCER

New York/New Jersey MetroStars (MLS) -- Announced Brazilian defender Branco signed a contract with Major League Soccer and has been assigned to the MetroStars.
