BASEBALL

Atlanta Braves -- Signed pitcher Dennis Martinez to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training; agreed to terms on one-year contracts with pitchers Kerry Ligtenberg and Micah Bowie and infielder Wes Helms.

Baltimore Orioles -- Signed free agent shortstop Ozzie Guillen, who had been with the Chicago White Sox, to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Boston Red Sox -- Re-signed infielder John Valentin to a four-year contract with an option for the 2002 season.

Cleveland Indians -- Signed free agent designated hitter-outfielder Geronimo Berroa, who had been with the Baltimore Orioles, to a one-year contract; designated pitcher Maximo DeLaRosa for assignment.

Detroit Tigers -- Signed free agent outfielder Pete Incaviglia, catcher Rob Fick and infielder Alejandro Freire to minor-league contracts and invited them to spring training.

San Francisco Giants -- Signed pitchers John Johnstone and Troy Brohawn to one-year contracts; traded infielder-outfielder David McCarty to the Seattle Mariners for outfielders Jalal Leach and Scott Smith.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Extended their cable television rightsholder contract with Fox Sports Midwest four years through the 2005 season.

Lancaster JetHawks (California League/A) -- Named Kevin Younkin assistant general manager and Bruce Battle public relations manager; promoted Chris Hale to director of ticketing.

BASKETBALL

Charlotte Hornets -- Activated guard Bobby Phills from the injured list.

Cleveland Cavaliers -- Waived guard Tony Dumas.

Orlando Magic -- Activated guard Penny Hardaway from the injured list.

Seattle SuperSonics -- Placed forward Jerome Kersey on the injured list with a separated shoulder; activated guard James Cotton from the injured list.

Eastern Basketball Alliance -- Announced the second annual EBA All-Star Game will be played on February 15th at Mercer County Community College in New Jersey.

FOOTBALL

New England Patriots -- Named Ernie Zampese offensive coordinator.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (CFL) -- Re-signed linebacker Gary Rogers to a two-year contract with an option.

Milwaukee Mustangs (Arena) -- Named Todd Sprinkle equipment manager.

Orlando Predators (Arena) -- Signed wide receiver Marcus Harris.

HOCKEY

Buffalo Sabres -- Announced that play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret has signed a multi-year contract; recalled defenseman Rumun Ndur from Rochester of the American Hockey League.

Florida Panthers -- Recalled goaltender Todd MacDonald from New Haven of the American Hockey League; placed goaltender Kevin Weekes on injured reserve with a strained groin.

Los Angeles Kings -- Recalled goaltender Frederic Chabot from Houston of the International Hockey League.

Ottawa Senators -- Assigned left wing Dennis Vial to Chicago of the International Hockey League.

Providence Bruins (AHL) -- Assigned goaltender Trevor Anderson to Charlotte of the East Coast Hockey League.

Rochester Americans (AHL) -- Signed center Derek Wood; released defenseman Justin Krall.

Springfield Falcons (AHL) -- Recalled left wing Andrew Dale from Mississippi of the East Coast Hockey League.

Syracuse Crunch (AHL) -- Signed defenseman Dwight Parrish; assigned goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin to Dayton of the East Coast Hockey League; added goaltender Tim Keyes from Dayton.

Detroit Vipers (IHL) -- Assigned right wing Denny Felsner to Chesapeake of the East Coast Hockey League; signed defenseman Brad Norton.

Baton Rouge Kingfish (ECHL) -- Placed goaltender Patrick LaBrecque on the seven-day injured reserve list; added goaltender Johan Hedberg from Detroit of the International Hockey League.

Chesapeake Icebreakers (ECHL) -- Sent defenseman Jeff DaCosta to the Columbus Chill to complete an earlier trade for player-coach Derek Clancy; moved goaltender Martin Legault from the seven-day to the 14-day injured reserve list; placed forward-defenseman Ryan Brown on the seven-day injured reserve list; activated left wing Colin Cloutier from the injured reserve list; added right wing Denny Felsner from Detroit of the International Hockey League.

Columbus Chill (ECHL) -- Added defenseman Jeff DaCosta to the roster.

Jacksonville Lizard Kings (ECHL) -- Activated defenseman Kam White and forward Kurt Mallett from the injured reserve list.

Louisville RiverFrogs (ECHL) -- Moved forward Jeff Mikesch from the seven-day to the 14-day injured reserve list; placed defenseman Stephane Madore on the seven-day injured reserve list.

Toledo Storm (ECHL) -- Placed right wing Bruce MacDonald on the seven-day injured reserve list; activated right wing Andrew Williamson from the injured reserve list.
