BASEBALL

Anaheim Angels -- Outrighted pitcher Mike Freehill to Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Arizona Diamondbacks -- Signed free agent pitcher Andy Benes, who had been with the St. Louis Cardinals, to a three-year contract.

Boston Red Sox -- Agreed to terms on a three-year contract with infielder Jeff Frye, avoiding salary arbitration.

Colorado Rockies -- Agreed to terms on one-year contracts with pitchers John Thomson, Bobby Jones and Mike Saipe.

Montreal Expos -- Signed pitchers Shawn Boskie and Mike Campbell and outfielder Chuck Carr to minor-league contracts and invited them and pitcher Tony Armas Jr. to spring training.

New York Mets -- Announced that Norfolk Tides (AAA) manager Rick Dempsey, pitching coach Ray Rippelmeyer and hitting coach Tom Lawless will return for the 1998 season; named Roger LaFrancois manager at Pittsfield of the New York-Penn League (A).

New York Yankees -- Announced the resignation of general manager Bob Watson; named Brian Cashman general manager.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Signed the following 12 players to one-year contracts: pitchers Armando Almanza, Mike Busby, Rich Croushore, Rick Heiserman, Curtis King, Sean Lowe and Brady Raggio; infielders Luis Ordaz and Placido Polanco; first baseman Chris Richard and outfielders Scarborough Green and Juan Munoz.

Seattle Mariners -- Agreed to terms on one-year contracts with pitchers Bob Wells, who was arbitration eligible, and Brett Hinchliffe and infielder/outfielder Charles Gipson.

Shreveport Captains (Texas League/AA) -- Named Brian Dulin director of group sales, Bill Ostermeyer sales associate and Kris Whittington video productions coordinator.

Grays Harbor Gulls (Western Baseball League/Independent) -- Re-signed pitcher Mark Peterson.

BASKETBALL

Charlotte Hornets -- Signed guard Vernon Maxwell to a 10-day contract; signed forward Donald Royal for the remainder of the season, effective Wednesday.

Houston Rockets -- Activated center Hakeem Olajuwon from the injured list; placed guard Emanual Davis on the injured list with tendinitis in his left knee.

FOOTBALL

Detroit Lions -- Released linebacker Antonio London and cornerback Corey Raymond; signed quarterback Chris Dittoe.

Miami Dolphins -- Dismissed offensive coordinator Gary Stevens.

Minnesota Vikings -- Reached agreement to sell the team to a group headed by Thomas L. Clancy Jr.

New Orleans Saints -- Named Rick Venturi assistant head coach/secondary coach, Jack Del Rio linebackers coach, Larry Kuharich running backs coach, Ned James defensive assistant and Markus Paul assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL) -- Named Dennis McPhee defensive line coach.

New Jersey Red Dogs (Arena) -- Signed fullback/linebacker Ricky Ceasar.

HOCKEY

National Hockey League -- Suspended Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Gary Suter four games without pay and fined him $1,000 for cross-checking Mighty Ducks of Anaheim left wing Paul Kariya in a game February 1st.

Edmonton Oilers -- Recalled right wing/defenseman Dennis Bonvie from Hamilton of the American Hockey League.

Montreal Canadiens -- Re-assigned center Eric Houde to Fredericton of the American Hockey League.

San Jose Sharks -- Recalled defenseman Rich Brennan from Kentucky of the American Hockey League.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Returned right wing Paul Brousseau to Adirondack of the American Hockey League.

Toronto Maple Leafs -- Returned center Kevyn Adams to St. John's of the American Hockey League.

American Hockey League -- Suspended Cincinnati Mighty Ducks right wing Igor Nikulin 10 games for physical abuse of an official during a game against Syracuse on January 31st.

Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) -- Recalled defenseman Dale Purinton from Charlotte of the East Coast Hockey League; assigned center Bob Maudie to Charlotte.

Dayton Bombers (ECHL) -- Placed defenseman Scott Thompson on the seven-day injured reserve list.

Johnstown Chiefs (ECHL) -- Waived center Greg Foulidis; activated center Scott Stephens from the injured reserve list.

Louisiana Ice Gators (ECHL) -- Placed forward Ryan Shanahan on the seven-day injured reserve list and defensemen Chad Nelson and Richard Smit on the 14-day injured reserve list; activated forward Scott McKay from the injured reserve list; added forward John Spoltore from Michigan of the International Hockey League.

Mobile Mysticks (ECHL) -- Waived defenseman Steve Adams; added forward Neil Donovan from Houston of the International Hockey League.

Peoria Rivermen (ECHL) -- Released goaltender Brian Hamilton as the emergency backup.

Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) -- Traded defenseman Patrick Charbonneau to the Baton Rouge Kingfish to complete a previous deal.

SOCCER

Major League Soccer -- Allocated Swedish defender Jan Eriksson to the Tampa Bay Mutiny.

COLLEGE

Mid-Continent Conference -- Ruled the Chicago State men's basketball team ineligible to participate in the conference tournament due to scheduling more than the permissible number of regular-season games.

San Jose State -- Announced the resignation of men's basketball head coach Stan Morrison, effective at the end of the season.

MEDIA

FOX Sports -- Named Brad Goode anchor of FOX Sports News Prime Time.
