BASEBALL

Florida Marlins -- Acquired pitcher Hector Ramirez from the Baltimore Orioles for a player to be named later or a cash consideration.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Signed pitcher Sean Maloney, infielders Mike Kinkade and Santiago Perez and outfielders Scott Krause and Geoff Jenkins to minor-league contracts.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Signed outfielders Tony Barron and Billy McMillon, pitchers Wayne Gomes and Calvin Maduro and infielder Kevin Sefcik to one-year contracts.

Texas Rangers -- Named Jim Byrd manager at Charlotte of the Florida State League (A) and Paul Carey manager at Savannah of the South Atlantic League (A).

Toronto Blue Jays -- Signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one-year contract, avoiding salary arbitration; signed free agent outfielder Jose Canseco, who had been with the Oakland Athletics, to a one-year contract.

BASKETBALL

Brooklyn Bounce (EBA) -- Signed center Michael Dobson and guard Richard Henry.

FOOTBALL

Carolina Panthers -- Released defensive end Ray Seals and linebacker Renaldo Turnbull; named Gil Haskell offensive coordinator.

St. Louis Rams -- Named Mike White quarterbacks coach in addition to his duties as assistant head coach; announced that vice president of football operations Lynn Stiles will also serve as tight ends coach.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL) -- Acquired running back Ronald Williams from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to complete an earlier trade.

Grand Rapids Rampage (Arena) -- Awarded kicker Charlie Baumann and wide receiver/defensive back Eric Wright from waivers.

Milwaukee Mustangs (Arena) -- Named Rick Frazier head coach.

San Jose Sabercats (Arena) -- Signed wide receiver/defensive back Montrell Williams; waived wide receiver/defensive back Vaughn Bryant.

HOCKEY

National Hockey League -- Suspended Mighty Ducks of Anaheim defenseman Ruslan Salei two games without pay and fined him $1,000 as a result of a head-butting incident against Chicago forward Sergei Krivokrasov in a February 1st game.

Dallas Stars -- Assigned defenseman Dan Keczmer to Michigan of the International Hockey League.

Edmonton Oilers -- Reassigned goaltender Mike Minard to Hamilton of the American Hockey League.

Florida Panthers -- Placed right wing Ray Sheppard on injured reserve with a strained left knee.

Los Angeles Kings -- Assigned goaltender Frederic Chabot to Houston of the International Hockey League.

New York Islanders -- Recalled left wing Vladimir Orszagh from Utah of the International Hockey League.

Phoenix Coyotes -- Recalled defenseman Jason Doig from Springfield of the American Hockey League.

Vancouver Canucks -- Returned left wing Dave Roberts and defenseman Chad Allan to Syracuse of the American Hockey League.

Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL) -- Reassigned forwards Mikhail Nemirovsky and Pierre Gendron from New Orleans to Charlotte of the East Coast Hockey League.

Rochester Americans (AHL) -- Signed center Dave Seitz and left wing Peter Vandermeer to a professional tryout.

Syracuse Crunch (AHL) -- Released defenseman Dwight Parrish.

Chicago Wolves (IHL) -- Acquired center Hugo Prouix from Portland of the American Hockey League; released left wing Matt Oates.

Quebec Rafales (IHL) -- Recalled right wing Sylvain Naud from New Mexico of the Western Professional Hockey League.

Baton Rouge Kingfish (ECHL) -- Activated goaltender Patrick Labrecque from the injured reserve list; placed forward Cam Brown on the seven-day injured reserve list; traded defenseman Patrick Charbonneau to the Roanoke Express to complete an earlier deal.

Charlotte Checkers (ECHL) -- Traded forwards Dean Moore and Stephane Soulliere to the New Orleans Brass for cash.

Mobile Mysticks (ECHL) -- Activated defenseman Jon Larson from the injured reserve list.

Fresno's Fighting Falcons (WCHL) -- Loaned defenseman Bob Wilkie to Las Vegas of the International Hockey League.

Idaho Steelheads (WCHL) -- Suspended right wing Carl Menard; moved left wing Lee Svangstu to the 14-day injured list.

Phoenix Mustangs (WCHL) -- Traded defenseman/right wing Barry Cummins and future considerations to the Tucson Gila Monsters for defenseman Don Lester and center Zdenek Sikl; moved center Savo Mitrovic to the 14-day injured list.

SOCCER

D.C. United (MLS) -- Traded forward Raul Diaz Arce to the New England Revolution and received a 1999 second-round pick and future considerations from the MetroStars in a three-way trade.

New England Revolution (MLS) -- Traded defender Alexi Lalas to the MetroStars in a three-way trade.

COLLEGE

Appalachian State -- Named T.J. Kostecky men's soccer coach.

Iona -- Named Fred Mariani head football coach.
