BASEBALL

Chicago Cubs -- Placed pitcher Kurt Miller on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 12, with a strained left rib cage muscle; will recall pitcher Rodney Myers from Iowa of the Pacific Coast League (AAA) on Tuesday.

Detroit Tigers -- Optioned outfielder Gabe Kapler to Toledo of the International League (AAA).

Florida Marlins -- Placed pitcher Alex Fernandez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 12, with an inflamed right rotator cuff; recalled third baseman Mike Lowell from his rehabilitation assignment with Calgary of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Milwaukee Brewers -- Placed shortstop Jose Valentin on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ligament in his left thumb; recalled infielder Lou Collier from Louisville of the International League (AAA).

Montreal Expos -- Placed pitcher Steve Kline on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 11 with inflammation of the left elbow; recalled pitcher Rick DeHart from Ottawa of the International League (AAA).

Oakland Athletics -- Purchased pitcher Mike Oquist from Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); optioned outfielder Ryan Christenson to Vancouver.

Texas Rangers -- Purchased pitcher Jeff Zimmerman from Oklahoma of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); optioned outfielder Scarborough Green to Oklahoma; designated infielder Rob Sasser for assignment.

Edmonton Trappers (Pacific Coast/AAA) -- Signed pitcher Paul Morse.

Michigan Battle Cats (Midwest League/A) -- Added infielder Jason Schaffer to the active roster; placed outfielder Luis Lopez on the disabled list.

Newark Bears (Atlantic League/Independent) -- Signed outfielder Brian Smith, infielder Greg Robertson and catcher Peto Ramirez.

BASKETBALL

Los Angeles Clippers -- Signed guard Troy Hudson to a multi-year contract.

Miami Heat -- Activated guard Voshon Lenard from the injured list; placed guard Blue Edwards on the injured list with plantar fasciaitis in his left foot.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Placed forward George Lynch on the injured list with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee; activated forward Rick Mahorn from the injured list.

FOOTBALL

Dallas Cowboys -- Signed quarterback Troy Aikman to a six-year contract extension; signed free agent center Mark Stepnoski, who had been with the Tennessee Titans, to a five-year contract.

Miami Dolphins -- Re-signed three restricted free agents: running back Karim Abdul-Jabbar, fullback Stanley Pritchett and defensive tackle Shane Burton to one-year tender contracts.

Minnesota Vikings -- Signed free agent tight end Carlester Crumpler, who had been with the Seattle Seahawks.

New York Jets -- Signed restricted free agent cornerback Ray Mickens to a one-year tender offer.

San Diego Chargers -- Announced the retirement of equipment manager Sid Brooks, effective at the end of the 1999 season.

HOCKEY

Colorado Avalanche -- Agreed with center Peter Forsberg on a multi-year contract.

Edmonton Oilers -- Recalled left wings Joe Hulbig and Vladimir Vorobiev from Hamilton of the American Hockey League.

Nashville Predators -- Recalled forwards Matt Henderson and Petr Sykora from Milwaukee of the International Hockey League; reassigned goaltender Chris Mason to Milwaukee.

AHL -- Announced that the Fredericton Canadiens will move to Quebec City for the 1999-2000 season and be renamed the Citadels.

Lowell Lock Monsters (AHL) -- Signed center Dana Mulvihill and defenseman Jon Sarg to tryout contracts.

Worcester IceCats (AHL) -- Recalled goaltender Dan Murphy and defenseman Matt Smith from Peoria of the East Coast Hockey League.

Idaho Steelheads (West Coast Hockey League) -- Signed center Marc Genest.

SOCCER

Minnesota Thunder (A-League) -- Signed midfielder Joenal Castma and forward Paul Schneider to one-year contracts with club options for 2000.

COLLEGE

Cal-Baptist -- Named Paul Kumamoto baseball coach.

Cal State Northridge -- Named Allison Lee women's soccer coach.

Cornell -- Named Christy McGinley assistant field hockey coach.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy -- Named Chris Ryan men's cross country coach and Michael Cuff assistant men's cross country coach.

Ohio -- Named Lynn Bria women's basketball coach.

St. John's -- Announced sophomore forward Ron Artest will forgo his college eligibility to enter the NBA draft.
