BASEBALL

Boston Red Sox -- Placed catcher Scott Hatteberg on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow.

Detroit Tigers -- Claimed infielder Rob Sasser on outright waivers from the Texas Rangers.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- Placed pitcher Wilson Alvarez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 11th, with an inflammed left shoulder; recalled pitcher Bryan Rekar from Durham of the International League (AAA).

Texas Rangers -- Paid the Florida Marlins $100,000 to complete a previous deal for catcher Gregg Zaun; assigned outfielder Mike Simms to a rehbilitation assignment with Charlotte of the Florida State League (A).

Toronto Blue Jays -- Signed free agent second baseman Pat Kelly; placed infielder Craig Grebeck on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right foot; announced that Rule 5 draft pick pitcher Eric Ludwick has cleared waivers and will be offered back to the Florida Marlins.

Rockford Reds (Midwest League/A) -- Placed catcher Ryan Zeber on the disabled list, retroactive to April 13, due to a concussion; signed catcher Chris Snusz.

Wisconsin Timbler Rattlers (Midwest League/A) -- Added catcher Scott Maynard and Rick Southall to roster.

Charleston Alley Cats (South Atlantic League/A) -- Activated pitcher Mike Russo from the 7-day disabled list; placed pitcher Jason Gilfillan on the disabled list.

Somerset Patriots (Atlantic League/Independent) -- Signed pitchers Wayne Hoy and John Duffy and infielder Joey Cruz.

Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (Texas-Louisiana League/Independent) -- Signed infielder Juan Mejia and pitcher Kevin Robell; re-signed first baseman-catcher R.J. Hendricks.

BASKETBALL

Continental Basketball Association -- Suspended guard Evers Burns of the Quad City Thunder for one game for leaving the bench during an altercation; suspended guard Reggie Elliott of the Sioux Falls Skyforce for five games for leaving the bench to join an altercation; fined Quad City Thunder forward Bakari Hendrix and Sioux Falls Skyforce forwards Kebu Stewart and Jason Sasser for their roles in an on-court altercation April 13.

Sioux Falls Skyforce (CBA) -- Signed forward Anthony Epps and placed guard Reggie Elliott on the injured list.

FOOTBALL

Cincinnati Bengals -- Re-signed resticted free agent guard Rod Jones and restricted free agent wide receiver Stepfret Williams to one-year contracts; waived guard Cory Withrow.

Dallas Cowboys -- Elected not to match an offer sheet tendered by the Carolina Panthers to wide receiver Patrick Jeffers.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Signed punter-kicker Sean Fleming.

Miami Dolphins -- Waived wide receiver Denis Montana.

St. Louis Rams -- Acquired running back Marshall Faulk from the Indianapolis Colts for undisclosed draft choices.

Amsterdam Admirals (NFL Europe) -- Waived linebacker Mikhail Slutsky.

Scotland Claymores (NFL Europe) -- Placed defensive back Terry Billups on injured reserve.

Nashville Kats (Arena) -- Signed lineman William Gaines, fullback-linebacker Rupert Grant and wide receiver-defensive back Curtis Jones; waived defensive specialist Jamie Coleman; suspended wide receciver-defensive back Buster Owens and fullback-linebacker Jason Bratton.

HOCKEY

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Recalled defenseman Scott Ferguson under emergency conditions from the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League.

Dallas Stars -- Recalled goaltender Manny Fernandez from Houston of the International Hockey League and defenseman Petr Buzek from Michigan of the International Hockey League under emergency conditions; re-assigned goaltender Marty Turco to Michigan.

Florida Panthers -- Assigned forwards Marcus Nilson and Peter Worrell and defenseman John Jakopin to New Haven of the American Hockey League.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Announced the retirement of defenseman Kjell Samuelsson, effective the end of the season.

Vancouver Canucks -- Assigned left wing Robb Gordon, center Josh Holden and defenseman Brent Sopel to Syracuse of the American Hockey League.

COLLEGE

East Coast Athletic Conference -- Announced that Lasell College, Newbury College, Simmons College, Thiel College and Washington College have been voted into membership for the 1999-2000 academic year.

Butler -- Named Wendy Gatlin women's basketball coach.

Duke -- Announced men's basketball guard William Avery will forgo his final two years of eligibility and enter the NBA draft.

Houston -- Named Jeff Davis associate athletic director for facilities.

New Mexico State -- Announced the resignation of athletics director Jim Paul, effective May 31.

Rhode Island -- Named Jerry DeGregorio men's basketball coach.

San Diego State -- Named Brian Dutcher assistant men's basketball coach.

Southern -- Announced the retirement of athletic director Marino Casem, effective June 30.

Southern Mississippi -- Named Rick Reeves women's basketball coach.
