BASEBALL

Chicago Cubs -- Released pitcher Hideo Nomo.

Cleveland Indians -- Recalled pitcher Jason Rakers from Buffalo of the International League (AAA); signed pitcher Steve Reed to a two-year contract extension.

Kansas City Royals -- Placed infielder Jeff King on the 15-day disabled list with a sore back; purchased the contract of pitcher Alvin Morman from Omaha of the Pacific Coast League.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Activated pitcher Jose Silva and shortstop Pat Meares off the the 15-day disabled list; sent pitcher Jim Dougherty outright to Nashville of the Pacific Coast League (AAA), optioned infielder Abraham Nunez to Nashville.

Seattle Mariners -- Signed pitcher Jamie Moyer to a two-year contract extension.

San Francisco Giants -- Acquired pitcher Jerry Spradlin from the Cleveland Indians for outfielder Dan McKinley and a player to be named; optioned pitcher Miguel Del Toro to Fresno of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- Activated first baseman Paul Sorrento off the 15-day disabled list, optioned pitcher Mike Duvall to Durham of the International League (AAA).

Durham Bulls (International League/AAA) -- Placed pitcher Bobby Munoz on the disabled list.

San Jose Giants (California League/A) -- Recalled outfielder Kevin Tommasini from extended spring training.

Sioux Falls Canaries (Northern League/independent) -- Signed pitchers Josh Oliver, Brian Grant and Steve Hahn and outfielder Josh Hannah.

BASKETBALL

Los Angeles Clippers -- Placed guard Darrick Martin on the injured list with a strained left knee; activated center Keith Closs from the injured list.

New Jersey Nets -- Re-signed forward David Vaughn to a second 10-day contract.

New York Knicks -- Signed forward Mirsad Turkcan; placed forward Ben Davis on the injured list with lower back pain.

FOOTBALL

Detroit Lions -- Signed unrestricted free agent defensive tackle Kelvin Pritchett; signed the following rookie free agents: safeties Nikia Codia and Sorie Kane, wide receivers Darryl Daniel, Jay Hall and Donnie Hart, defensive tackle Charles Dorsey, kicker Brian Gowins, linebackers Joey Hall and Joe Tuipala, cornerbacks Demetrius Johnson and Phil Nash, center Jeremy Offutt, punter Daniel Pope, tackle Marek Rubin, tight end Kerry Taylor.

Miami Dolphins -- Re-signed safety Shawn Wooden.

New Orleans Saints -- Re-signed wide receiver Gunnard Twyner and defensive tackle Troy Ridgley to one-year contracts; signed center-guard Tom Ackerman, tight end Scott Slutzker, gurd-tackle Keno Hills and defensive end Brady Smith to one-year tendered contracts; signed wide receiver Dannan Hughes to a one-year contract; waived running back Terrell Willis; signed the following rookie free agents; tight end Cuncho Brown, defensive tackle Justin Ernest, guard Rick Nord, centers Thomas Schau and Justin Burroughs, linebacker Donnie Spragan, wide receivers L.C. Stevens and P.J. Franklin, cornerback Chris Cummings, safety Gana Joseph and fullback Marvin Powell.

New York Giants -- Signed the following rookie free agents: safeties Ty Ardoin and Kelvin Suggs, quarterback Steve Buck, wide receiver Kenny Cheatham, defensive tackles Greg Derrick and Steve Konopka, defensive ends Frank Ferrara and Rasheed Simmons, offensive lineman Scott Kiernan, tackle Dan Lauta, cornerbacks Bashir Levingston and Cedric Stephens, guard Bryan Pukenas, linebackers Kenny Sanders and Jessie Tarplin.

San Diego Chargers -- Released wide receiver B.J. Adigun, cornerback Kevin Brown and running backs Mike Martin and Justin Watson.

Seattle Seahawks -- Signed the following rookie free agents: linebackers Josh Amundson and Brian Rogers, guard Mondell Corbett, tight end Rufus French and James Hill, defensive tackles T.J. Frier, Gary Holmes and Kevin Thomas, running backs Brian Goolsby and Jay Hinton, defensive back Matt Hickl, kicker Jamie Kohl, quarterback Kevin Kreinhagen, safety Tod McBride, punter Brian Moorman and defensive end Jonathan Nance.

SOCCER

Major League Soccer -- Reassigned mifielder Carlos Valderrama from the Miami Fusion to the Tampa Bay Mutiny.

COLLEGE

Jacksonville -- Announced the resignation of sports information director Jim Horten to take a similiar post at Troy State.

Miami (Ohio) -- Announced that sophomore guard Doug Davis will transfer to Miami (Ohio) from the Michigan State men's basketball team.

Pittsburgh -- Announced that sophomore forward Stephen Flores has decided to transfer.

St. Francis (PA) -- Sophomore forward Sam Sutton announced he will transfer from the men's basketball team.

UCLA -- Announced that sophomore center-forward Travis Reed has been released from his scholarship.
