BASEBALL

Baltimore Orioles -- Agreed to terms with outfielder Quincy Ascencion.

Chicago Cubs -- Signed catcher Jeff Reed for the remainder of the season with a club option for 2000; optioned pitcher Rodney Myers to Iowa of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Florida Marlins -- Promoted pitcher Gary Knotts to Portland of the Eastern League (AA) from Brevard of the Florida State League (A).

New York Mets -- Optioned pitcher Octavio Dotel to Norfolk of the International League (AAA); recalled third baseman Mike Kinkade from Norfolk.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Activated pitcher Mike Williams from the 15-day disabled list; optioned pitcher Jimmy Anderson to Nashville of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); purchased the contract of catcher Chris Tremie from Nashville; transferred pitcher Rich Loiselle from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list; optioned catcher Yamid Haad to Altoona of the Eastern League (AA).

Jacksonville Suns (Southern League/AA) -- Announced the resignation of assistant general manager Todd Budnick; placed pitcher Keilan Smith on the disabled list.

Portland Sea Dogs (Eastern League/AA) -- Placed pitcher Aaron Cames on the disabled list, retroactive to July 6, with a right shoulder strain.

Massachusetts Mad Dogs (Northern League) -- Acquired catcher Wilie Oropeza from the New Jersey Jackals for future considerations.

Charleston Alley Cats (South Atlantic League) -- Placed outfielder Brian Shackelford and pitcher Jeremy Jackson on the 7-day disabled list; activated outfielder-designated hitter Jeremy Freitas; recalled pitchers Ryan Douglass and Carlos Pichardo from Spokane of the Northwest League.

FOOTBALL

Atlanta Falcons -- Signed safety Johndale Carty, their fourth-round draft pick.

Minnesota Vikings -- Signed the following free agents: defensive tackle Jose White and linebacker Terry Rice-Locket.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Signed wide receiver Brian Finneran and defensive tackle Tyrone Williams to two-year contracts.

Seattle Seahawks -- Signed the following free agents: defensive tackles Denauld Brown and Winfield Garnett and linebacker Sedrick Clark.

Washington Redskins -- Signed tackle Derek Smith, their fifth-round draft pick, and kicker Jeff Hall, their sixth-round draft pick.

HOCKEY

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Re-signed restricted free agent goaltender Dominic Roussel to a multi-year contract.

Chicago Blackhawks -- Signed free agent goaltender Steve Passmore, who had been with the Edmonton Oilers, to a multi-year contract.

Los Angeles Kings -- Named Mark Hardy and Dave Tippet assistant coaches.

New York Rangers -- Signed free agent right wing Theo Fleury, who had been with the Colorado Avalanche.

Washington Capitals -- Named Ben Shaffer team physician.

American Hockey League -- Named Ross Yanco director of corporate sales and buisness development.

Long Beach Ice Dogs (IHL) -- Re-signed defenseman Rene Chapdelaine to a two-year contract.

East Coast Hockey League -- Approved the move of the Chesapeake Icebreakers to Jackson, Mississippi.

Mississippi Sea Wolves (ECHL) -- Signed right wing Brad Essex to a one-year contract.

Southwestern Wisconsin (UHL) -- Signed right wing Luke Strand.

COLLEGE

Sacred Heart -- Named Wendy Langerhole and Edward Strapp assistant athletic trainers; named Matthew Bucci coordinator of athletic communications.

Samford -- Named Mary Olks assistant women's volleyball coach and Dean Vance assistant athletic trainer.

UCLA -- Named Jillian Ellis women's soccer coach.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire -- Named Marlin Muylaert hockey coach.
