BASEBALL

Arizona Diamondbacks -- Acquired pitcher Matt Mantei from the Florida Marlins for pitchers Vladimir Nunez and Brad Penny and a player to be named; transferred pitcher Todd Stottlemyre from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list; optioned outfielder Dante Powell to Tucson of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); purchased the contract of pitcher Erik Sabel from Tucson.

Baltimore Orioles -- Picked up the option on third baseman Cal Ripken's contract for the 2000 season.

Chicago White Sox -- Optioned pitcher Pat Daneker to Birmingham of of the Southern League.

Colorado Rockies -- Optioned pitcher Dave Wainhouse to Colorado Springs of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); recalled pitcher Mike Porzio from Colorado Springs.

Detroit Tigers -- Fired pitching coach Rick Adair, named Dan Warthen pitching coach.

Houston Astros -- Placed pitcher Joe Slusarski on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin; recalled pitcher Jose Cabrera from New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Kansas City Royals -- Designated pitchers Don Wengert and Marc Pisciotta for assignment; purchased the contract of pitcher Dan Reichert from Omaha of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); recalled pitcher Ken Ray from Omaha; added pitcher Eric Vann to the 40-man roster and optioned him to Charleston of the Carolina League.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Activated shortstop Shawon Dunston from the 15-day disabled list; optioned pitcher Mike Busby to Memphis of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

San Francisco Giants -- Activated catcher Scott Servais from the 15-day disabled list; optioned catcher Doug Mirabelli to Fresno of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Texas Rangers -- Activated outfielder Ruben Mateo from the 15-day disabled list; optioned pitcher Ryan Glynn to Oklahoma of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Toronto Blue Jays -- Activated outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. from the 15-day disabled list; placed outfielder-designated hitter Geronimo Berroa on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 30, with a pulled left oblique muscle.

Charleston Alley Cats (South Atlantic League/A) -- Signed outfielder Moises Rojas; promoted outfielder Mike Curry to Wilmington of the Carolina League (A).

South Bend Silver Hawks (Midwest League/A) -- Named Thomas Patterson public address announcer for the remainder of the season.

BASKETBALL

Washington Wizards -- Named Andrew Cleary strength and conditioning coach.

FOOTBALL

Seattle Seahawks -- Signed linebacker Scott Fields; claimed offensive tackle Scott Whittaker off waivers from the Oakland Raiders.

Washington Redskins -- Signed tackle Jon Jansen, their second-round draft pick, to a five-year contract, and linebacker Nate Stinson, their fourth-round draft pick, to a four-year contract.

HOCKEY

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Announced agreement with the Detroit Red Wings to help stock the roster of the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League.

Buffalo Sabres -- Re-signed defenseman Mike Hurlbut to a multi-year contract.

Dallas Stars -- Signed free agent defenseman Mark Wotton, who had been with the Vancouver Canucks, to a three-year contract.

Detroit Red Wings -- Agreed with unrestricted free agent goaltender Ken Wregget on a multi-year contract.

Phoenix Coyotes -- Signed defenseman Kiril Safronov, the team's first-round selection in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Toronto Maple Leafs -- Signed unrestricted free agent defensemen Greg Andrusak, who had been with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Terran Sandwith, who had been with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim; signed restricted free agent defenseman Brian Wiseman.

Arkansas River Blades (ECHL) -- Named Geoff Ward coach.

Pee Dee Pride (ECHL) -- Named Frank Anzalone coach.

Muskegon Fury (United Hockey League) -- Re-acquired the rights to right wing Mike Feasby.

Phoenix Mustangs (WCHL) -- Signed goaltender David Goverde.

COLLEGE

Anderson -- Named Debbie Holcombe assistant softball coach.

Fairfield -- Named Roy Harrison men's and women's cross country coach.

Gannon -- Named Bill Graham men's baseball coach.

Holy Cross -- Named Jim Kavanagh director of track and cross country.

IUPUI -- Signed men's basketball coach Ron Hunter to a new five-year contract.

Lamar -- Named Dan Theiss assistant men's basketball coach.

Mary Hardin-Baylor -- Named Charlotte Mason women's softball coach and Marcia Oliveira women's soccer coach.

Saint Francis (IN) -- Named Patricia Martin women's softball coach and Jeff Rekeweg men's golf coach.
