Cincinnati Reds -- Promoted pitcher Dave Therneau to Chattanooga of the Southern League (AA); promoted pitcher Casey McEvoy to Rockford of the Midwest League (A).

Oakland Athletics -- Activated catcher Mike Macfarlane; optioned catcher A.J. Hinch to Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

San Diego Padres -- Assigned pitcher Omar Ortiz and catcher Tony Cosentino to Fort Wayne of the Midwest League (A).

Seattle Mariners -- Signed the following 199 draft picks: outfielder Sheldon Fulse, shortstop Vaughn Schill and pitcher Justin Smith.

New Jersey Jackals (Northern League/Independent) -- Signed outfielder Dan Wydner; released outfielder Chris Edelstein.

Orlando Magic -- Signed forward Corey Maggette, a first-round pick in the 1999 draft.

NCAA -- Named Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson chairman of the men's Division I basketball committee from September 1 to September 1, 2000; named Big East Conference commissioner Mike Tranghese chairman of the men's Division I basketball committee from September 1, 2000 to September 1, 2001; granted one-year extensions to the following committee members: Mike Tranghese in 2001, Lee Fowler of Middle Tennessee State in 2002, Jack Kvancz of George Washington in 2003, Judy Rose of North Carolina-Charlotte in 2004 and Gene Smith of Iowa State in 2004.
