BASEBALL

Chicago White Sox -- Recalled outfielder Brian Simmons from Charlotte of the International League (AAA); optioned infielder Jeff Liefer to Charlotte.

Detroit Tigers -- Announced catcher Raul Casanova was activated from the 60-day disabled list, cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Toledo of the International League (AAA).

Kansas City Royals -- Extended the contract of manager Tony Muser through the 2000 season.

Durham Bulls (International League/AAA) -- Promoted outfielder Kraig Hawkins from Orlando of the Southern League (AA); placed outfielder Carlos Mendoza on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Piedmont Boll Weevils (Class A/South Atlantic League) -- Promoted infielder Uriel Casillas to Clearwater of the Florida State League (A).

South Bend Silver Hawks (Class A/Midwest League) -- Placed outfielder John Adams on the disabled list; signed outfielder Kevin Burnes.

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A/Midwest League) -- Added infielder Vaughn Schill.

New Jersey Jackals (Independent/Northern League) -- Activated pitcher Mark Lemke from the disabled list; released pitcher Tony Cuchetti.

BASKETBALL

Atlanta Hawks -- Signed Jason Terry and Cal Bowdler, two of their three 1999 first-round picks.

Miami Heat -- Named Kim Stone senior director of WNBA operations.

FOOTBALL

Chicago Bears -- Signed defensive back Dorian Brew, defensive end David Sanders and defensive tackle Jarrett Loggins.

Miami Dolphins -- Waived wide receiver Siaha Burley, defensive end Eric Davis and safety Jackie Mitchell; signed defensive end Walter Scott.

HOCKEY

New York Rangers -- Signed left wing Jan Hlavac.

Philadelphia Flyers -- Signed forward Chris Albert to a one-year contract.

St. Louis Blues -- Re-signed Group II free agent center Pierre Turgeon to a two-year contract.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Fired coach-general manager Jacques Demers; named Steve Ludzik coach; announced president Rick Dudley will assume the role of general manager.

Toronto Maple Leafs -- Named coach Pat Quinn general manager.

Portland Pirates (AHL) -- Signed defenseman Gerad Adams to a one-year contract.

Mississippi Sea Wolves (ECHL) -- Signed center Kevin Hilton.

Anchorage Aces (WCHL) -- Signed defenseman Fred Gustafsson.

Arkansas GlacierCats (WPHL) -- Signed right wing Brian Pellerin and also named him as an assistant coach.

San Jose Rhinos (RHI) -- Released forward Mike Jickling.

HORSE RACING

National Thoroughbred Racing Association -- Named James Gallagher executive director of the NTRA Task Force on Racing Integrity and Drug Testing Standards.

Chicago Fire (NPSL) -- Acquired midfielder John Ball from Cleveland.

Akron -- Announced the school will add women's soccer in 2000-2001.

Boston College -- Named Tom Babson women's ice hockey coach.

Findlay -- Named Cal Dietz and Greg Gilbert offensive line coaches.

Fordham -- Named Bob Hill men's basketball coach.

Kentucky Wesleyan -- Named Greg McVey baseball coach.

NC Asheville -- Named Jenni Reynolds assistant volleyball coach.

Oregon -- Named Dan Muscatell assistant women's basketball coach.

Rhode Island -- Named Bobbi Morse and Edith Thompson women's assistant basketball coach.

Roanoke College -- Named Blair Calvert women's volleyball coach.
