BASEBALL

Major League Baseball -- Fined and suspended Seattle Mariners pitchers Jose Paniagua five games and Damaso Marte three games, outfielder Jay Buhner four games and first baseman David Sequi three games, Los Angeles Dodgers coach Rick Dempsey until August 3, pitcher Jamie Arnold five games and catcher Todd Hundley three games for their role in a bench-clearing brawl on July 11.

Baltimore Orioles -- Designated catcher Lenny Webster for assignment; activated pitcher Ricky Bones from the 15-day disabled list; recalled third baseman Ryan Minor from Rochester of the International League (AAA); optioned pitcher Gabe Molina to Rochester.

Florida Marlins -- Acquired pitcher Kevin Gordon from the Colorado Rockies to complete a March 29 trade and assigned him to Utica of the New York/Penn League (A).

Houston Astros -- Placed outfielder Carl Everett on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring; purchased the contract of outfielder Lance Berkman from New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); transferred third baseman Ken Caminiti from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Kansas City Royals -- Placed pitcher Jeff Montgomery on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 10, with tendinitis in his right hip; purchased the contract of pitcher Brian Barber from Omaha of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); sent outfielder Eric Vann outright to Charleston of the South Atlantic League (A); announced that pitchers Mark Pisciotta and Don Wengert have cleared waivers; sent Pisciotta outright to Omaha; granted Wengert his free agency.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Acquired pitcher Rocky Coppinger from the Baltimore Orioles for a player to be named later.

Montreal Expos -- Placed pitcher Carl Pavano on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in his right elbow.

Oakland Athletics -- Signed outfielder Ryan Ludwick, their second-round pick in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Activated pitcher Heathcliff Slocumb from the 15-day disabled list; optioned second baseman Placido Polanco to Memphis of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- Optioned outfielder Randy Winn to Durham of the International League (AAA); recalled outfielder Terrell Lowery and pitcher Mike Duvall from Durham; designated pitcher Scott Aldred for assignment.

Vancouver Canadians (Pacific Coast League/AAA) -- Placed outfielder Mike Neill on the temporary inactive list.

Columbus RedStixx (South Atlantic League/A) -- Placed outfielder Jesus Hernandez on the disabled list; placed pitcher Juan Aracena on the temporary inactive list.

Schaumburg Flyers (Northern League/independent) -- Signed infielder-outfielder Jack Voigt; signed pitcher Andy Wise; placed Jim Rushford on the voluntarily retired list; placed third baseman Terry Beyna on irrevocable waivers; placed pitcher Will Rushing on the disabled list with a right hamstring injury.

BASKETBALL

Philadelphia 76ers -- Signed forward Jumaine Jones, the 27th selection in the 1999 NBA draft.

FOOTBALL

Carolina Panthers -- Waived defensive end Vernon Broughton; reached an injury settlement with defensive end Mitch Marrow.

Miami Dolphins -- Signed offensive lineman Derrick LeVake.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Signed wide receiver Troy Smith, their sixth-round draft pick; and tight end Jed Weaver, their seventh-round pick, to three-year contracts; resigned safety Sean Woodson to a one-year contract.

HOCKEY

Buffalo Sabres -- Signed goaltender Mika Noronen and right wing David Moravee to multi-year contracts.

Colorado Avalanche -- Re-signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Alexei Gusarov to a multi-year contract; signed center Samuel Pahlsson and defenseman Sanny Lindstrom, their fourth-round pick in the 1999 draft, to multi-year contracts.

Dallas Stars -- Signed center Roman Lyashenko to a three-year contract and center Pavel Patera to a one-year contract with a club option for 2000-01.

Detroit Red Wings -- Signed forward Yuri Butsayev, the team's second-round selection in the 1999 NHL draft, to a three-year entry level contract.

Ottawa Senators -- Re-signed center Vaclav Prospal to a multi-year contract; named Peter Chiarelli to the newly created position of director of legal relations.

Phoenix Coyotes -- Signed left wings Mika Alatalo and Jean-Guy Trudel, defenseman Francois Leroux and right wings Stephen King and David Oliver.

Washington Capitals -- Acquired goaltender Craig Billington from the Colorado Avalanche for future considerations.

Charlotte Checkers (ECHL) -- Signed defensemen Rocky Welsing and Brooke Chateau and left wing Mike Rucinski to one-year contracts.

Greensboro (ECHL) -- Named Scott White assistant coach.

Fort Wayne Fury (UHL) -- Re-signed right wing Robin Bouchard to a two-year contract.

Anchorage Aces (WCHL) -- Named Bob Wilkie coach.

Fresno Falcons (WCHL) -- Re-signed right wing Christian Skoryna.

San Antonio Iguanas (CHL) -- Acquired the rights to goaltender Corwin Saurdiff from the Columbus Cottonmouths for future considerations.

Chicago Bluesmen (RHI) -- Acquired defenseman Scott Usmail and the rights to forward Trevor Buchanan to Buffalo for the rights to forward Kyle Reeves.

HORSE RACING

Gulfstream Park -- Announced the resignation of track announcer Tom Durkin.

SOCCER

United Soccer Leagues -- Announced the transfer of A-League operating rights in Sacramento to Masscahusetts Professional Soccer.

COLLEGE

Cal State Northridge -- Dismissed football coach Ron Ponciano.

Charleston -- Named Paul Harrison men's assistant basketball coach.

Michigan Tech -- Assistant hockey coach Scott White announced his resignation.

Penn State -- Announced the retirement of women's track and field coach Teri Jordan.

Thomas More -- Named Kathy Herring women's tennis coach.

Tusculum College -- Named Mike Corn graduate assistant baseball coach.

St. Cloud -- Named Mark Hulet defensive coordinator; named Lori Fish women's assistant basketball coach.

Wisconsin-Whitewater -- Named Darren Schneider men's track and field coach.
