BASEBALL

Baltimore Orioles -- Optioned third baseman Ryan Minor to Rochester of the International League (AAA).

Florida Marlins -- Signed pitcher Paul Menhart and infielder Mariano Duncan and assigned them to Calgary of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Houston Astros -- Placed infielder Jack Howell on the 15-day disabled list with a ruptured tendon sheath in his right wrist; recalled first baseman Daryle Ward from New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Montreal Expos -- Placed pitcher Miguel Batista on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 16, with a strained oblique muscle in his left side; recalled pitcher J.D. Smart from Ottawa of the International League (AAA).

Oakland Athletics -- Placed outfielder Tim Raines on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his kidney; recalled pitcher Blake Stein from Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); promoted outfielder Eric Byrnes from Modesto of the California League (A) to Midland of the Texas League (AA); added outfielder Ryan Ludwick to Modesto.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Purchased the contract of pitcher Larry Luebbers from Memphis of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); optioned pitcher Rick Heiserman to Memphis; transferred pitcher Donovan Osborne from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- Acquired pitcher Marty Barnett from the Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named.

Texas Rangers -- Optioned pitcher Ryan Glynn to Oklahomna of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); recalled pitcher Danny Kolb from Oklahoma.

Fresno Grizzlies (Pacific Coast League/AAA) -- Optioned infielder Carlos Campusano to Shreveport of the Texas League (AA); recalled second baseman Travis Young from Shreveport.

Vancouver Canadians (Pacific Coast League/AAA) -- Recalled outfielder Mario Encarnacion from Midland of the Texas League (AA).

FOOTBALL

Chicago Bears -- Waived quarterback Erik Kramer.

Denver Broncos -- Signed center Tom Nalen and linebacker Bill Romanowski to five-year contract extensions; signed the following 1999 draft picks: running back Olandis Gary, wide receivers Chad Plummer and Billy Miller, tight end Justin Swift and defensive back Darwin Brown.

Detroit Lions -- Signed wide receiver Herman Moore to a contract extension through 2005.

HOCKEY

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Agreed to terms with television play-by-play broadcaster Chris Madsen on a three-year contract extension through 2001-02.

Atlanta Thrashers -- Signed free agent forwards Nelson Emerson, who had been with the Ottawa Senators, and Dean Sylvester; named Matt McConnell television play-by-play broadcaster.

Edmonton Oilers -- Signed free agent center Eric Houde, who had been with the Montreal Canadiens.

New York Rangers -- Promoted Jeanie Baumgartner to vice president of marketing and named Jason Vogel manager of public relations.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Signed defenseman Mikko Kuparinen to a two-year contract.

Washington Capitals -- Signed right wing Glen Metropolit.

Kansas City Blades (IHL) -- Signed defenseman Jon Rohloff.

Pensacola Ice Pilots (ECHL) -- Signed forward John McNabb and center Frederick DuFour.

Idaho Steelheads (WCHL) -- Signed defenseman Jason Lammers.

Fort Worth Brahmas (WPHL) -- Re-signed center Cosmo Dupaul.

San Jose Rhinos (RHI) -- Signed defenseman Bob Wilkie; released defenseman Igor Bondarev and forwards Iannique Renaud and Ralph Barahona.

COLLEGE

Mid-Continent Conference -- Named Dustin Bozwell assistant commissioner for external affairs.

Clemson -- Named Charles Foster assistant track and field coach.

Florida State -- Named Dwayne Hultquist men's tennis coach.

North Carolina -- Announced the retirement of sports information director Rick Brewer, effective February 1, 2000.

Redlands -- Announced men's golf coach David Tolsma has resigned his position.

Samford -- Named Alan Verlander associate athletic director of external operations.

Southwest Baptist -- Named Donald Thompson men's and women's soccer coach.

Towson -- Named Brian Johnson assistant women's basketball coach.
