Florida Marlins -- Signed pitcher Paul Menhart and infielder Mariano Duncan and assigned them to Calgary of the Pacific Coast League (AAA). Houston Astros -- Placed infielder Jack Howell on the 15-day disabled list with a ruptured tendon sheath in his right wrist; recalled first baseman Daryle Ward from New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League (AAA). Montreal Expos -- Placed pitcher Miguel Batista on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 16, with a strained oblique muscle in his left side; recalled pitcher J.D. Smart from Ottawa of the International League (AAA). Oakland Athletics -- Placed outfielder Tim Raines on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his kidney; recalled pitcher Blake Stein from Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); promoted outfielder Eric Byrnes from Modesto of the California League (A) to Midland of the Texas League (AA); added outfielder Ryan Ludwick to Modesto.
