BASEBALL

Baltimore Orioles -- Acquired minor league pitcher Juan Aracena and a player to be named from the Cleveland Indians for designated hitter Harold Baines; recalled pitcher B.J. Ryan from Rochester of the International League (AAA).

Cincinnati Reds -- Placed first baseman Hal Morris on the 15-day disabled list with a broken rigt wrist; recalled catcher Jason LaRue from Indianapolis of the International League (AAA).

Cleveland Indians -- Placed pitcher Steve Karsay on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, with a strained tendon in his right forearm; recalled pitcher Tom Martin from the Buffalo of the International League (AAA); designated outfielder Mark Whiten for assignment; optioned infielder Jolbert Cabrera to Buffalo.

Florida Marlins -- Recalled catcher Ramon Castro from Calgary of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); promoted catcher Nate Reese from Brevard County of the Florida State League (A) to Calgary.

Houston Astros -- Placed outfielder Glen Barker on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, with a left oblique muscle strain; purchased the contract of outfielder Ryan Thompson from New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Montreal Expos -- Released pitcher Bobby Ayala; recalled pitcher Guillermo Mota from Ottawa of the International League (AAA).

Oakland Athletics -- Activated catcher Ramon Hernandez from the 15-day disabled list; optioned catcher A.J. Hinch to Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Seattle Mariners -- Recalled pitcher Robert Ramsay from Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- Placed pitcher Dave Eiland on the 15-day disabled list with left hip bursitis; recalled pitcher Alan Newman from Durham of the International League (AAA).

Texas Rangers -- Acquired pitcher Jeff Fassero from the Seattle Mariners for a minor league player to be named; transferred pitcher Eric Gunderson from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

San Jose Giants (California League/A) -- Placed pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez on the disabled list, retroactive to August 25.

Winston Timber Rattlers (Midwest League/A) -- Placed pitcher Enmanuel Ulloa on the disabled list; activated pitcher Jose Matos from the disabled list.

BASKETBALL

Dallas Mavericks -- Re-signed free agent forwards Gary Trent to a one-year contract with a player option and Cedric Ceballos to a two-year contract.

Houston Rockets -- Acquired forwards Tony Massenburg and Makhtar Ndiaye and the rights to guards Steve Francis, Lee Mayberry and Rodrick Rhodes and forward Michael Smith from the Vancouver Grizzlies for guards Brent Price and Michael Dickerson, forwards Othella Harrington and Antoine Carr and a conditional first-round pick; traded the rights to guards Lee Mayberry and Rodrick Rhodes and forward Michael Smith to the Orlando Magic for forward Don MacLean and a conditional first-round pick.

Utah Jazz -- Signed free agent center Olden Polynice, who had been with the Seattle SuperSonics.

Vancouver Grizzlies -- Signed free agent forward Dennis Scott, who had been with the Minnesota Timberwolves; acquired a 2002 second-round pick from the Orlando Magic to complete the three-team trade also involving the Houston Rockets.

FOOTBALL

Denver Broncos -- Waived defensive end Ben Crosland, offensive tackle Tim Kohn, wide receiver Chad Plummer and tight end Justin Swift.

Miami Dolphins -- Terminated the contract of fullback Roosevelt Potts.

New England Patriots -- Signed running back Terry Allen, who had been with the Washington Redskins, to a multi-year contract.

New York Jets -- Agreed to an injury settlement with defensive tackle Carl Hansen; waived running back Odell Collins, wide receiver Shawn Foreman, safety Jason Poles, tackle Jason Mills and linebacker Courtney Ledyard.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Waived wide receivers Kotto Cotton and Harvey Middleton; linebacker Partise Alexander, offensive lineman Wendall Gaines, running back Aaron Hayden and fullback Jamie Spencer.

HOCKEY

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Signed defenseman Pavel Trnka to a three-year contract.

San Jose Sharks -- Signed defensemen Rejean Stringer and Jon Coleman.

Kansas City Blades (IHL) -- Signed forward Dody Wood for the 1999-2000 season.

Dayton Bombers (ECHL) -- Signed goaltender Jason Saal.

Florida Everblades (ECHL) -- Agreed to terms with defensemen Eric Ricard, Bill Kohn and Todd Kidd on one-year contracts.

Fresno Falcons (WCHL) -- Signed goaltender Jeff Blair.

Anchorage Aces (WCHL) -- Signed goaltender Chris Marvel.

Amarillo Rattlers (WPHL) -- Signed forward Tom Gomes.

Fort Worth Brahmas (WPHL) -- Re-signed forward Jon Olofson; signed forward Craig Conley.

Bentley -- Named Ann-Marie Flynn assistant volleyball coach.

Bucknell -- Named Brad Tufts interim athletic director.

Cal Poly -- Announced men's basketball junior guard Jabbar Washington has decided to transfer to another institution for the 1999-2000 season.

Coast Guard -- Added the title of interim baseball coach to men's basketball coach Pete Barry.

Delaware -- Named Peye Garcia, Steve Meldrom and Ken Cohen assistant men's soccer coaches.

Florida A&M -- Named Rey Robinson men's track and field coach and Donya Andrews-Little women's track & Field coach.

Florida Atlantic -- Named Stephanie Witty assistant women's basketball coach.

Guilford -- Named Scott Quick and Steve Diamond assistant men's soccer coaches.

Kutztown -- Named Suresh Ramamurthi men's and women's tennis coach.

Pittsburgh -- Announced the resignation of women's volleyball coach Cindy Alvear, effective at the end of the 1999 season.

Quinnipiac -- Named Janet Rooney assistant women's volleyball coach.

San Jose State -- Named Steve Barnes men's basketball coach.
