BASEBALL

Arizona Diamondbacks -- Assigned pitcher Jose Velverde to South Bend of the Midwest League (A).

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Renewed their working agreement with the following affiliates for the 2000 season: San Antonio of the Texas League (AA), Yakima of the Northwest League (A), Great Falls of the Pioneer League (A) and San Bernardino of the California League (A).

Milwaukee Brewers -- Placed catcher David Nilsson on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right thumb; purchased the contract of catcher-infielder Brian Banks.

Montreal Expos -- Recalled pitcher Scott Strickland from Ottawa of the International League (AAA); optioned pitcher Javier Vazquez to Vermont of the New York-Penn League (A).

San Diego Padres -- Receveived cash considerations from Cleveland to complete August 16 deal for infielder Carlos Baerga; announced that contract of director of player development Jim Skaalen will not be renewed.

Seattle Mariners -- Recalled pitcher Ken Cloude from Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); optioned pitcher Steve Sinclair to Tacoma.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Purchased the contract of outfielder Vernon Wells from Syracuse of the International League (AAA); optioned third baseman Casey Blake to St. Catherine's of the New York-Penn League (A); waived designated hitter Geronimo Berroa.

BASKETBALL

Chicago Bulls -- Signed free agent guard B.J. Armstrong, who had been with the Orlando Magic.

Sacramento Kings -- Signed guard Ryan Robertson, their second round draft pick.

Dakota Wizards (IBA) -- Signed guard Brandon Martin.

Rochester Skeeters (IBA) -- Signed guard Prince Fowler II.

FOOTBALL

Atlanta Falcons -- Waived safety Chris Byrne, defensive tackle Bob Kuberski, cornerback Rod Smith, wide receivers J.T. Thomas and Octavus Barnes, tackle Cornell Green and linebacker Lamont Green; placed center Todd McClure on injured reserve.

Carolina Panthers -- Waived wide receiver Daryle Heidelburg.

Chicago Bears -- Released the following 15 players: tight end Marlon Chambers, center Michael Early, wide receivers Chris Penn and Derrell Mitchell, running back Aaron Stecker, fullback Jim Finn, defensive tackles Jarett Loggins and Emile Palmer, linebacker Chris Draft, cornerbacks Quincy Coleman, Nick Ferguson and Heron O'Neal, safety Greg Williams, punter Chris Dolan, and quarterback Moses Moreno.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Waived quarterback Eric Kresser, fullback Clif Groce, guard Rob Murphy; placed linebacker Greg Truitt on injured reserve; placed linebacker Tom Tumulty on the reserve-physically unable to perform list.

Cleveland Browns -- Linebacker Chris Spielman announced his retirement.

Detroit Lions -- Waived defensive end Jermaine Benoit, linebacker Joey Hall; defensive tackle Marc Matock and quaterback Ron Powlus; placed linebacker Matt Russell on injured reserve; placed defensive tackle Dan Owens and linebacker Kevin O'Neill on the physically unable to perform list.

Green Bay Packers -- Waived linebackers Lamont Hollinquest and Louis Adams, defensive tackle Howard Burns and wide receivers Dee Miller and Zola Davis; placed center Mike Newell on the reserve-non football injury list.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Signed lineman Ralph Tamm to a two-year contract; acquired tight end Mitch Jacoby from the St. Louis Rams for a conditional draft pick in 2000; released wide receiver Reggie Jones; released punter-kicker Sean Fleming.

New England Patriots -- Waived fullback Brian Aikins, wide receivers Keivi Baker, Nafis Karim, Chad Mackey and Sir Mawn Wilson, quarterbacks Jim Murphy and Scott Mutryn, running backs Marques Brigham, cornerback Nate Brooks, guard Daniel Collins, defensive tackles James Grier and James Manley, tight end John Lumpkin, tackle Matt Reem, offensive lineman Brent Warren and punter-kicker Marcus Williams.

New Orleans Saints -- Waived defensive tackles Marvin Coley and Troy Ridgley, guards Scott Shaw and Joe Cocozzo, cornerbacks Chris Cummings and Carlos Jones, wide receiver Alonzo Johnson, safeties Scott Gumina and Tony Maranto and tight end Roderick Lewis; placed defensive tackle Justin Ernest and tight end Tony Johnson on the reserve physcially able to perform list.

New York Giants -- Waived quarterback Steve Buck, punter Brion Hurley, running back Reynard Rutherford, wide receiver Anthony Tucker and defensive end Charles Estes; placed fullback Raymond Priester and cornerback Kelvin Suggs on injured reserve.

New York Jets -- Waived defensive end Mike Frederick, guard-center Doug Karczewski, wide receivers Brian Musso and Joe Douglass, linebacker Marc Megna, cornerback Del Lee and fullback Jermaine Wiggins.
