Arizona Diamondbacks -- Placed infielder Andy Fox on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 28, with strained ribs; purchased the contract of outfielder Turner Ward from Tucson of the Pacific Coast League (AAA) and placed him on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right knee.

Atlanta Braves -- Signed catcher Jorge Fabregas, optioned pitcher Dave Cortes to Jamestown of the New York-Penn League (A); designated pitcher Mike Cather for assignment.

Baltimore Orioles -- Acquired pitcher Jimmy Hamilton from the Cleveland Indians as the player to be named in the Harold Baines trade.

Boston Red Sox -- Placed third baseman John Valentin on the 15-day disabled list with patella tendinitis in the left knee; recalled infiedler Wilton Veras from Pawtucket of the International League (AAA).

Chicago Cubs -- Traded pitcher Rod Beck to the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Mark Guthrie and a player to be named; purchased contract of catcher Jose Molina from Iowa of the Pacific Coast League.

Chicago White Sox -- Placed pitcher Scott Eyre on the 15-day disabled list with an impingement of his left rotator cuff; recalled infielder Liu Rodriguez from Birmingham of the Southern League (AA).

Cleveland Indians -- Acquired infielder-catcher Tyler Houston from the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Richard Negrette; activated pitcher Dwight Gooden from the 15-day disabled list; optioned pitcher Tom Martin to Buffalo of the International League (AAA); purchased the contract of pitcher Jim Poole from Akron of the Eastern League (AA) and pitcher Sean DePaula from Buffalo; placed pitcher Jason Rakers on the 60-day DL with a pulled left groin and pitcher David Riske on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique muscle.

Colorado Rockies -- Traded infielder-outfielder Lenny Harris to the Arizona Diamondbacks for infielder Belvani Martinez; recalled infielder Chris Sexton from Colorado Springs of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Houston Astros -- Activated outfielder Alex Diaz from the 15-day disabled list; asked for unconditional release waivers on Diaz and pitcher Sean Bergman; recalled pitcher Jose Cabrera from New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); designated outfielder Ryan Thompson for assignment.

San Francisco Giants -- Traded outfielder Stan Javier to the Houston Astros for pitcher Joe Messman; assigned Messman to San Jose of the California League (A); recalled outfielder Calvin Murray from Fresno of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

St. Louis Cardinals -- Recalled first baseman Eduardo Perez, catcher Marcus Jensen and pitcher Mark Thompson from Memphis of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

Toronto Blue Jays -- Claimed catcher Pat Borders off waivers from the Cleveland Indians; recalled pitcher John Hudek from Syracuse of the International League (AAA); transferred infielder Craig Grebeck and outfieler Rob Butler to the 60-day disabled list.

San Antonio Spurs -- Signed free agent center Felton Spencer, who had been with the Golden State Warriors.

Toronto Raptors -- Re-signed free agent forward Charles Oakley to a three-year contract.

International Basketball Association -- Re-signed commissioner Alex English.

St. Louis Swarm (IBL) -- Named Bernie Bickerstaff coach and general manager.

Chicago Bears -- Released kicker Brian Gowins; waived cornerback Dorian Brew; reached an injury settlement with defensive tackle Joe Fleming; placed offensive tackles Jimmy Herndon and Chad Overhauser on injured reserve.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Placed guard Ken Blackman on the reserve-physically unable to perform list; signed punter Eddie Howard to a three-year contract.

Denver Broncos -- Waived running back Ryan Christopherson, quarterback Chuck Clements, safeties Jason Moore and Brad Trout, center Clay Shiver and wide receiver Shawn Turner; placed center Lennie Friedman on injured reserve and linebacker Chris Gizzi on the reserve-military list.

Detroit Lions -- Acquired running back Greg Hill from the St. Louis Rams for two undisclosed 2000 draft picks; signed line backer Andre Collins, placed tackle Aaron Gibson on injured reserve; released the following players: safety Nikia Codie; defensive tackle Charles Dorsey; wide receivers Henry Douglas and Freddie Scott; guard Dwayne Morgan and linebacker Joe Tuipala.

Green Bay Packers -- Claimed defensive end Jabbar Threats from the Jacksonville Jaguars on waivers; placed safety Kerry Cooks on waivers; claimed defensive tackle Anthony Dingle from the Pittsburgh Steelers on waivers, placed defensive end Jonathan Brown on waivers.

Miami Dolphins -- Have been awarded wide receiver Kevin McKenzie off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles; waived running back Juan Johnson, tight end Frank Leatherwood, guard O'Lester Pope, guard Mike Sheldon, linebacker Derik Stevenson, cornerback Emmanuel McDaniel; waived defensive tackle Dwaine Robinson with an injury settlement; placed wide receiver Robert Baker and tackle Joe Wong on injured reserve; placed linebacker Sammie Burroughs on the reserve-physically unable to perform list.

New Orleans Saints -- Placed defensive tackle Joe Jackson on injured reserve; waived wide receiver Malcolm Floyd and CB Anthony Cobbs.

New York Giants -- Signed safety Brandon Sanders; waived linebacker Jessie Tarplin.
