BASEBALL

Chicago Cubs -- Signed pitcher Bobby Ayala for the remainder of the season; recalled outfielder Bo Porter from Iowa of the Pacific Coast League (AAA); transferred pitcher Jeremi Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Houston Astros -- Purchased the contract of outfielder Ryan Thompson from Auburn of the New York-Penn League (A).

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Purchased the contract of pitcher Eric Gagne from San Antonio of the Texas League (AA).

Philadelphia Phillies -- Activated pitcher Curt Schilling and from the 15-day disabled list and catcher Tom Prince from the 60-day disabled list; purchased the contract of infielder Torey Lovullo from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of the International League; recalled pitcher Cliff Politte from Reading of the Eastern League (AA).

Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- Signed first baseman Fred McGriff to a multi-year contract extension.

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Midwest League/A) -- Activated pitcher Enmanuel Ulloa from the disabled list.

BASKETBALL

Miami Heat -- Signed free agent center Amal McCaskill and free agent forward Harold Jamison.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Named John Calipari assistant coach; promoted Tony DiLeo to director of player personnel and John Croce to physical conditioning coach.

Cincinnati Stuff (IBL) -- Signed guard Chris Kingsbury to a one-year contract.

FOOTBALL

Miami Dolphins -- Released quarterback Craig Erickson; placed wide receiver Lamar Thomas on injured reserve.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats -- Signed wide receiver Tony Akins.

HOCKEY

Atlanta Thrashers -- Signed center Patrik Stefan, their first-round pick in 1999, to a three-year contract; agreed to terms with goaltender Scott Langkow; named Darren Eliot television analyst and signed him to a multi-year contract.

Buffalo Sabres -- Signed right wing Maxim Afinogenov to a three-year entry-level contract; signed left wing Eric Boulton and center Jason Cipolla.

Edmonton Oilers -- Re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Christian Laflamme to a three-year contract.

Phoenix Coyotes -- Signed defenseman Stanislav Neckar to a multi-year contract.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- Re-signed unrestricted free agent center Tyler Wright to a multi-year contract.

St. Louis Blues -- Named Aaron Komarek strength and conditioning coordinator, Stanley Richardson communications manager and Jeff Wright massage therapist.

San Jose Sharks -- Re-signed free agent center Jarrod Skalde; signed right wing Teemu Riihijarvi.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Named Brad Shaw assistant coach.

Vancouver Canucks -- Re-signed left wing Todd Bertuzzi.

Mississippi Sea Wolves (ECHL) -- Re-signed defenseman Patrick Rochon to a one-year contract.

Pensacola Ice Pirates (ECHL) -- Acquired defenseman Yanick Jean from New Orleans for center Mark Polak; acquired forward L.P. Charbonneau from Greenville for Jean.

Corpus Christi IceRays (WPHL) -- Re-signed forward Dave Shute.

COLLEGE

Hofstra -- Named Bill Zatulskis women's assistant basketball coach.

Missouri-Kansas City -- Named Terry Mohajir interim assistant athletics director for external relations.

Towson -- Announced basketball forward Sam Sutton has transferred from St. Francis (PA).

William Patterson -- Named Jim Pisegna defensive coordinator; Scott Santora special teams and defensive backs coach; Ken Pentgitore quarterbacks coach; Bryan Murray running backs coach; Todd Agresta linebackers coach; and Demetrick Williams assistant coach.
