Charles Barkley, among the NBA’s most colorful players and selected as one of the NBA’s “50 Greatest Players in History,” will be a studio analyst for the 2000-01 NBA season on TNT and TBS Superstation. Barkley signed an exclusive, multi-year agreement with Turner Sports, according to the announcement made today by Turner Sports President Mark Lazarus.

In addition to working on the NBA, the deal will allow Barkley to contribute on other properties televised by TNT and TBS Superstation. Turner Sports has agreements to televise the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, Atlanta Braves baseball, NASCAR races, Wimbledon, professional golf and other events.

“We’re excited to add Charles’ unique personality to our broadcast team, and we believe his candor and perspective will bring more fans and viewers to our networks,” says Lazarus. “We’ll also work with Charles to explore other avenues in the Turner/Time Warner family to further diversify his post-playing career.”

Also known for his humorous television commercials, film appearances and books, Barkley said, “I’m very excited about starting my new broadcasting career, and I’m grateful to Turner for the opportunity.” Marc Perman, of the William Morris Agency, and Barkley’s business manager, Glenn Guthrie, negotiated the agreement for Barkley.

Barkley is currently on the injured list for the Houston Rockets, and is in his 16th and final season as an NBA player. He won the NBA’s MVP Award in 1993, is a five-time All-NBA first team selection, and was a member of 11 All-Star teams. He was the leading scorer for the gold medal-winning 1992 Olympic Dream Team and the 1996 Olympic team, and has been on the NBA All-Interview First Team several times. Barkley began his career with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984, and after eight seasons was traded to the Phoenix Suns prior to the 1992-93 campaign. After four seasons in Phoenix, he was traded to the Rockets in August 1996. Barkley is 13th all-time in NBA scoring, and joins Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in NBA history with more than 23,000 points, 12,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists.

Turner Sports, Inc., presents some of the best and most popular sporting events worldwide, and is a leader in televised sports programming. With events airing on four networks-TBS Superstation, TNT, Turner South and CNN Sports Illustrated-Turner Sports’ impressive lineup includes the NBA, Atlanta Braves baseball, the Goodwill Games, NASCAR, Wimbledon, professional golf, Atlanta Hawks basketball, Atlanta Thrashers hockey, figure skating, track and field and college football.
