TNT’s Coverage of PGA Championship Sets Record Third Round Rating and Record Final Round Household Delivery


Turner Network Television (TNT) posted strong sports performances by the 2001 PGA Championship coverage for the week ending August 19. The four-day PGA Championship event (Aug. 16-19) was highlighted by a TNT/TBS Superstation record 2.3 rating for third-round coverage on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. (ET). The final round on Sunday, Aug. 19, produced a record household delivery of 2,173,000 and a 2.7 rating, which tied the previous final round ratings high from 1991. TNT sports highlights for the past week include the following:

  • Third-round coverage of the 2001 PGA Championship posted a record high 2.3 rating (1,865,000 households) on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. (ET), up 10% from the previous third-round high of 2.1 in 1997 and up 53% from last year’s third round 1.5 rating.

  • Final-round coverage of the 2001 PGA Championship set a record household delivery of 2,173,000 homes. The final round also tied the highest rating of the event’s history on TNT/TBS Superstation with a 2.7, previously captured in round two of 1997 and final round of 1991. This rating was 80% higher than last year’s final round rating of 1.5.

  • TNT’s 2001 PGA Championship coverage averaged a network record 2.1, up 17% from last year’s 1.8 average, and up 24% from TNT’s debut coverage in 1999 (1.7 average rating). Turner Sports has televised cable coverage of the PGA Championship since 1991. This was the third consecutive year that TNT aired the event, which was previously seen on TBS Superstation.
