Marv Albert to Make Debut as a Tennis Commentator During TNT’s Coverage of the 2000 Wimbledon Championships

Albert Well-known play-by-play personality Marv Albert will debut as a tennis commentator for TNT's coverage of the 2000 Wimbledon Championships, beginning on June 26. Albert, who currently does play-by-play for the NBA on TNT and TBS Superstation, will do men's play-by-play throughout the 2001 Wimbledon Championships, according to an announcement made today by Turner Sports Executive Producer Mike Pearl. TNT (61 hours) and CNN/Sports Illustrated (28 hours) will air coverage of the 2001 Wimbledon Championships from June 26-July 9. Howard Zalkowitz will produce the coverage.

"Marv has met with great success broadcasting the NBA, the NHL, the NFL, Major League Baseball and the Olympics," said Pearl. "What's left for him to do besides the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world - Wimbledon."

Albert also broadcasts New York Knicks games on radio, and hosts the nightly wrap-up show, SportsDesk, on Madison Square Garden Network (MSG). Earlier in his career, he spent 20 years with NBC and was the top play-by-play voice for NBC Sports' coverage of the NBA (1990-97), while also handling the same duties for MSG's regional television coverage of the Knicks (1986-87 through 1996-97). He was a Knicks and New York Rangers (NHL) play-by-play voice from the 1967-68 season until 1997.

While at NBC (1977-97), Albert handled play-by-play for various events, including Olympic boxing (1988) and basketball (1992 and 1996, Dream Teams I and III), college basketball, boxing, NFL football, the NBA and NHL All-Star Games. He also hosted studio shows for Major League Baseball coverage and other pre-game shows. He returned to NBC's NBA coverage during the 1999-2000 season.

Albert has won numerous awards for his work, including the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and six CableAce Awards for Outstanding Play-by-Play, and was the 32nd person inducted into the Madison Square Garden Walk of Fame (1996). He has been named New York State Sportscaster of the Year 20 times.

Albert has written four books, voiced-over several sports videos and made cameo appearances in movies and sitcoms, as well as numerous talk show appearances.
