TBS Superstation To Air John Thompson Foundation Classic Live on Dec. 20

A Generation Later, Georgetown Hoyas and Virginia Cavaliers Meet Again on TBS Superstation

For Release: Nov. 27, 2001

TBS Superstation will commemorate its 1982 telecast of the historic battle between seven footers Patrick Ewing and Ralph Sampson when the network televises the #16 Georgetown Hoyas vs. the #8 Virginia Cavaliers in the John Thompson Foundation Classic, live on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m. (ET). From the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., the game will raise money for the John Thompson Foundation. Ewing, Sampson, Thompson and former Cavaliers head coach Terry Holland will all be honored at halftime.

"I’m thrilled that we have the opportunity to showcase the talents of these young kids in an environment like this," said Thompson. "I'm grateful to the Superstation, Georgetown University and the University of Virginia for making this event happen and helping to raise money for the foundation."

Bob Neal will provide play-by-play, with Thompson offering game analysis. Craig Sager reports from the sidelines. Neal called the game when the two teams battled on the Superstation in 1982.

The original game between Georgetown and Virginia aired on WTBS on December 11, 1982, and the Cavaliers won 68-63. This year’s battle is part of the John Thompson Foundation Classic, named after current the TBS Superstation NBA analyst and former Georgetown coach. The John Thompson Foundation has worked with the Kidney Foundation, has purchased athletic equipment for inner-city schools, and has provided scholarships to underprivileged high school students.
