Sarah, 18, defeated Elizabeth, 21, 6-1, 6-4 in an all-sister final in the U.S. national amateur tennis championships. Sarah, who was the top seed in the women's division of the championships and rookie of the year in the Big Ten last spring, broke her older sister's serve three times in the first set and won the second on a break in the final game. A three-time Wisconsin state high school champion and a second-semester freshman at the University of Michigan this fall, Sarah is the No. 1-ranked women's singles player for the Wolverines, while Elizabeth, a senior, is ranked No. 5 on the team.

Miguel, 9, defeated Matthew Donofrio of Mars, Pa., in the finals to win the boys' bantam IV division under-30-kilogram title at the national Junior Olympic judo championships. During his 1� years of competition in the sport, he has also won two state age-group crowns.

Jillian, 6, set the U.S. record for six-year-olds in the Presidential Physical Fitness One Mile run when she ran 28 laps around the James L. Collins Catholic School gymnasium in a time of 8:32. A first-grader at Collins, Jillian also plays soccer and basketball.

Lobrano, 19, was fifth in the 218-pound class at the junior world weightlifting championships and was the top U.S. finisher. He set American junior records in the snatch (330� pounds) and total lift (727�) and also lifted 396� in the clean and jerk.

Deanne Hemmens
COSTA MESA, CALIF.
Hemmens, 30, a meeting planner for a hotel chain, won four gold medals at the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Team Sprint Nationals. She won the 200-and 500-meter single kayak, the 500 double kayak (with Alexandra Harbold of Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) and the 500 four-woman kayak.
