"Alter playing in the NBA, this can be a tough life: small towns, nothing to do," says McCloud. "But I have focused on the task at hand. I think I have done what I had to do. I have stayed strong mentally, and I have earned another chance."
On Jan. 30, McCloud got that chance when the Mavericks signed him to a 10-day contract. He signed a second 10-day deal on Feb. 9 and at week's end was likely to be offered a contract for the rest of the season. Through Sunday he was averaging 8.5 points and 17.6 minutes. He wasn't making big money or doing sneaker commercials, but he wasn't complaining. He was back in the League. This time, you can bet, no one had to tell him how lucky he was.
