In your article about Darin Erstad, a North Dakotan who plays left field for Nebraska (SPORTS PEOPLE, April 24), you state that Roger Maris is the only famous athlete to hail from North Dakota. Did you forget Phil Jackson (left, with ball), who grew up in Williston, N.Dak., and played basketball at the University of North Dakota? Drafted in the second round by the New York Knicks, Jackson was named to the NBA's 1967-68 all-rookie team, and five years later he helped the Knicks win a championship. Today, of course, he is coach of the Chicago Bulls.
By the way, Jackson's college coach was current L.A. Clipper coach Bill Fitch (bottom left). The assistant coach was Jimmy Rodgers (bottom right), who has been an NBA head coach and is now an assistant with the Bulls.
