For those of us who have lost a loved one to suicide, it's hard to understand the paradox of someone who is full of energy, ambition and altruism and at the same time tormented by depression and low self-esteem. You did an excellent job of illustrating how those phenomena can coexist and what may result.
MARY VAN HAUTE
This sentence appeared in the article that dealt with the suicide of Sarah Devens: "According to a source, The Boston Globe quashed a follow-up story on her death when the Devens family made an arrangement with the publisher of the newspaper." For the record, there was no such arrangement. At no time did I discuss this sad story and the newspaper's handling of it with anyone from outside the Globe or inside our newsroom.
