During the American Football Coaches' Association Golf Championship in June, Gator coach Steve Spurrier bumped into Cougar coach Kim Helton, an old friend and fellow Florida graduate. "Kim, now I've seen y'all's film," Spurrier said jokingly, "and, I'll tell you, we're going to have a hard time keeping it under 60." Shockingly, the Gators fell well short of that total against a Houston team that was 1-10 last year, was ranked 100th or lower in the nation in three defensive categories and was a 46-point underdog entering Saturday's opener. Given the emphasis pollsters have recently placed on margin of victory, the No. 5 Gators should be thankful they didn't lose any ground in the rankings.
