The New Guy: Defenseman Larry Murphy, 34, was acquired from Pittsburgh and will continue his quiet, Hall of Fame career in Toronto.
Outlook: The pieces are all here, but somehow they haven't fit. With comeback seasons from Gilmour, Hogue, goalie Felix Potvin and wing Dave Andreychuk, Toronto could win two playoff rounds. Sixth in the conference.
Star of Stars: Former 50-goal scorer Mike Modano has recovered from the ruptured tendons in his left ankle that kept him out of last season's final 14 games and the playoffs. Modano also threw his weight around in the preseason, much to coach Bob Gainey's delight.
The Breakthrough: Tough and talented center Todd Harvey is capable of scoring 35 goals and piling up 150 penalty minutes. Harvey is so coveted around the league that Pittsburgh offered Luc Robitaille straight up for him, before trading Robitaille to the Rangers.
Revved Up: Seven Dallas players, including Harvey, now ride Harleys. The gang calls itself the Mosquitoes.
Outlook: With Kevin and Derian Hatcher, Doug Zmolek and Richard Matvichuk, the Stars have four first-rate defensemen. One of them needs to be dealt for a big-time scorer. Seventh in the conference.
San Jose Sharks
The Break: Goalie Arturs Irbe underwent surgery in June to repair the middle finger of his right hand, fractured when he was attacked by his dog before last season. Irbe needs to fight off Wade Flaherty, whose 56 saves in a double-overtime Game 7 playoff victory over the Calgary Flames last spring has given him a push in the battle for No. 1.
The Breakthrough: Rookie Viktor Kozlov, a 6'5", 225-pound wing who was the No. 6 overall pick two years ago, broke his left ankle during the lockout and missed most of last season. Now he's poised to make an immediate impact.
