Other possibilities: 11. Ron Turner, offensive coordinator, Bears; 12. Gary Barnett, coach, Northwestern; 13. Emmitt Thomas, defensive coordinator, Eagles; 14. Paul Hackett, offensive coordinator, Chiefs; 15. Bruce Coslet, offensive coordinator, Bengals.
Old faces we may see in new places:
•Neil O'Donnell to the Jets? Could be. He has been on a hot streak at quarterback for the Steelers, but O'Donnell may not be Pittsburgh property for long. Rather than match the $3.5 million a year he can fetch as a free agent this off-season, the Steelers will likely try to lure lower-priced Jeff Hostetler, who will be free to leave the Raiders after this season, or give one of O'Donnell's backups, Jim Miller or Kordell Stewart, the job. O'Donnell will draw interest from the Jets, who have former Pittsburgh personnel man Dick Haley at coach Rich Kotite's right hand. New York will have an opening because it probably won't make a generous offer to incumbent quarterback Boomer Esiason.
•The Bears to Gary, Ind.? It's nearly a done deal, according to a source close to the negotiations between Chicago president Mike McCaskey and officials from Gary. If Gary's financial package is solid, the Bears would rather play in a new 75,000 seat, open-air stadium located 22 miles outside Chicago than a refurbished stadium with parking and logistical problems.
•Brett Favre losing his mentor? Cal athletic director John Kasser has interviewed Packer quarterback coach Steve Mariucci about the head coaching job with the Golden Bears. Mariucci will probably take the job if it is offered.
The End Zone
Remember Green Bay running back Travis Jervey, who we told you (SI, Oct. 30) was upbraided by Mike Holmgren for trying to buy a lion as a pet? The further adventures of Travis: He was stopped for speeding in Green Bay last week, and when the officer asked for his license and registration, Jervey tried to explain why he was driving so fast. "I have a radar detector," he told the officer, "but my stereo was on so loud I couldn't hear it."
He didn't get a ticket.
