A mother and child reunion goes on at Pittsburgh's Oakland Catholic High when Suzie McConnell-Serio mixes her girls' basketball coaching duties with the responsibilities of motherhood. McConnell-Serio, who played for the U.S. Olympic team in 1988 and '92, gave birth to Amanda Nicole Serio on Feb. 19, two hours alter she had to leave the bench during a game because her water had broken. Amanda has behaved pretty well at practice, though last week she started fussing while her mom was explaining a new way to break the press. That meant assistant coach Pete Serio, Suzie's husband and Amanda's father, was called on to quiet her. That's not always the way it works, though. "It's pretty obvious that when Amanda's hungry," says Suzie, "Pete runs practice and I do the nursing."
