The most earthshaking event of the young baseball season happened on April 2, when Cecil Fielder took off on Minnesota Twins pitcher Dan Naulty and rumbled his way to second base for the first steal of his 11-year major league career. The Detroit Tigers' substantial slugger had gone 1,097 games without swiping a base, and though the theft isn't likely to start catchers trembling in their cleats, it does remove Fielder from a select group of athletes whose lifetime stats show a conspicuous goose egg in one category. Here are some notable examples.
