Can you make out Allen Edwards in this large picture that appeared on the front page of the Lexington Herald-Leader on April 2, the day after Kentucky won the NCAA championship? Edwards, standing behind embracing seniors Tony Delk and Walter McCarty, is barely visible, but the compliance police lat the NCAA can see him clear as day. "They told the newspaper that if it followed through with plans to produce a commemorative T-shirt bearing the image of that front page, it would jeopardize the eligibility of Edwards, a guard who will be a junior next year. The NCAA explained that using an athlete whose eligibility has not expired "to promote a commercial enterprise" is unacceptable, even though the athlete in no way participated in—or even knew about—the venture. Herald-Leader editor Tim Kelly acceded to the NCAA's wishes, and the T-shirts were never manufactured. But the experience left him shaking his head. "It's insanity," he said. Our sentiments exactly.
