Ryan Andrus OREM, UTAH Ryan, a senior at Mountain View High, beat out a field of 3,200 at the prestigious Vulcan Classic cross-country meet, completing the 5,000-meter race in a course-record 14:47.95. He is also the Utah high school champ at two miles and won that event at the Golden West Invitational in June.

Ryan, a senior at Mountain View High, beat out a field of 3,200 at the prestigious Vulcan Classic cross-country meet, completing the 5,000-meter race in a course-record 14:47.95. He is also the Utah high school champ at two miles and won that event at the Golden West Invitational in June.

Mike Barnesky
SAFETY HARBOR, FLA.
Barnesky, 81, a retired automobile-model maker and a 12-handicap golfer, beat his age by 10 strokes when he fired a 71 on the 6,104-yard West Course of Belleair Country Club during a local tournament. The best under-his-age round by a pro is Jerry Barber's 69 at age 78 at the 1994 Kroger Classic.

Marcia Cleveland
RIVERSIDE, CONN.
Cleveland, 32, an advertising representative, completed the 28�-mile swim around Manhattan Island in 5:57.53, the best time ever by an American woman. Cleveland, who was a distance swimmer at Yale, also swam the English Channel in 1994, finishing in 9:44, sixth fastest for a U.S. woman.

Romaro Miller
SHANNON, MISS.
Romaro, a senior quarterback at Shannon High, became Mississippi's alltime total offense leader when he threw for 317 yards and rushed for 86 yards in a 48-28 win over Kossuth High. That gave him 9,733 yards, 376 more than the mark set in 1991 by Clifton Davis III of North Panola High in Sardis.

Pavla Melicharova
PLZEN, CZECH REPUBLIC
Melicharova, a senior All-America middle hitter at Northwood University in Midland, Mich., became the Division II leader in career kills with 2,236 when she spiked 17 in a five-game loss to Ferris State. The old record of 2,228 was set by Amy Miller of Mesa State from 1991 to '94.

Chester Weber
OCALA, FLA.
Weber, 21, became the youngest to win the U.S. Equestrian Team Pairs driving championship when he had only 139.1 penalties over three days to defeat Lisa Singer, 49, of Chadds Ford, Pa., who accumulated 139.5. Last spring Weber won the overall title at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.
