Five days later the results crawl out of a fax machine. Scott Dunlap, with a 17-under-par 267, has won the 62nd Campeonato Abierto Regional del Litoral. This must be true, but it merits a late-night phone call to Cook in Uruguay.

"Yes, that happened," he says from his room in the Balmoral Plaza Hotel. "But the really interesting thing that happened was...." And Cook tells this story about a club member at the Rosario barbecue who hacked at his meat with a gaucho knife yanked from a sheath behind his back.

It's a funny story—not at all implausible—and it ends with Jeff Schmid counting his money twice.
