Fathering out-of-wedlock kids has become commonplace among athletes, many of whom seem oblivious to the legal, financial and emotional consequences
In addition to stressing safe sex during their rookie orientation, 15 NFL teams participate in an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Child Services that promotes involvement by fathers in their kids' lives. Athletes from all sports would be well served to remember the words of the public-service announcement featuring various members of the Detroit Lions: "Whether you're married, divorced or single, fatherhood is forever."
