During last year's U.S. Open, Colin Montgomerie felt faint on Friday and asked his wife, Eimear, for an aspirin. On Saturday, waiting out a rain delay, he tried to buy a shirt at the pro shop only to discover there were none in his size. On Sunday, irked by loud fans, he blew a five-foot putt to fall out of a tie for the lead. Starting with his third-place finish at the '92 Open at Pebble Beach, the Troon Unit has defined major beleaguerment. Is he due? With Ernie Els and Tiger Woods suffering back twinges, David Duval, Justin Leonard and Lee Westwood may be the front-runners, but aside from Els and Tom Lehman, only Montgomerie has top 10 finishes in four of the last six U.S. Opens. Flush with confidence after leading the European team over the favored Yanks in last fall's Ryder Cup and armed with the game's most accurate three-wood, Monty might be the right man on the right course at the right time. Nobody is due-er than the dour Scotsman.

A Chance for New Friendly's Faces
Fans at Crestview Country Club may be crestfallen to learn that Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb are taking the week off, but their absence could be good news for Brandie Burton, Chris Johnson, Betsy King, Michelle McGann, Alison Nicholas and defending champion Deb Richard. Those six have won 59 tour titles, but they are winless this season. Without the cream of the LPGA crop in the way, one of them could rise to the top.
