Young Guns Shoot It Out in Western
Don't be fooled by the staid old Western Open, which turns 99 this week. Or by its roster of golden-age winners, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead. Behold a new wrinkle at the 7,073-yard, par-72 Dubsdread Course: youth. Last summer 21-year-old Tiger Woods cruised past Frank Nobilo by three shots to win the Western. A few weeks later Matt Kuchar, 19, won the U.S. Amateur on the same course. This year's Western pits Woods against twentysomething challengers David Duval, Ernie Els, Justin Leonard and Lee Westwood, and to a couple of veterans named Janzen and Stewart. Cog Hill also plays host to the Wee Western, an innovative day-care program for players' children.
