Putter Man and His Problem Proboscis
In March defending CVS champ Loren Roberts broke two ribs while sneezing. He joined Gary Player, who once pulled a muscle in a bathtub, and Sam Torrance, who tweaked his neck getting out of bed, in the Wile E. Coyote Golf Injury Hall of Shame. Roberts, a 43-year-old putting specialist, withdrew from the Bay Hill Invitational after his nosequake and has seen his winnings nosedive from $1,089,140 in 1997, 15th best on Tour, to just $210,247 this year. There's hope, however, for Roberts this week in New England. He finished in the top 20 at the U.S. Open and spent part of last week within sniffing distance of the lead at Royal Birkdale.
