On Aug. 6, Irish swimmer Michelle Smith, who won three gold medals at the 1996 Olympics, was banned for four years for tampering with a urine sample she had submitted for a random drug test. Over the years athletes trying to mask illegal drugs have used vinegar, cleaning fluid and detergent; Smith's sample was spiked with what one investigator termed "a lethal concentration of alcohol," perhaps whiskey.
