There's no question that Roger Maris's 37-year-old home run record was the most hallowed mark in sports, partly because of its longevity, but even more because it has survived so many serious challenges. On five occasions before this season players had come within nine dingers, or 15%, of tying Maris. Compare that with the number of times anyone has come within similar distance of these other noted single-season benchmarks.
