Sorenstam Sleeps With Playing Partner

As marriage minefields go, this one's somewhere between politics and Pictionary. David Esch is turning pro to team with his wife, Annika Sorenstam, at the JCPenney Classic, an annual mixed-doubles event. "I think it's a mistake," says Dottie Pepper, speaking not as a marriage counselor but as an offended competitor. "He's not a real pro." Maybe, but what's a scratch-golfing husband to do? This year's Penney pairings were a Sadie Hawkins affair. Laura Davies chose John Daly—they're the blond boomers. Dale Eggeling tabbed Fuzzy Zoeller, who will make his first appearance here since 1982. Sorenstam had asked her previous Penney partner, Jesper Parnevik, to rejoin her this year, but he had a previous commitment, so she asked hubby Esch if he wanted the job. "I do," he said. The coosome twosome won't lack intimate knowledge of each other's mood swings or backswings, and their inexperience as a tournament team needn't count against them. Clarence Rose and Amy Fruhwirth met for the first time two days before last year's Penney Classic and went on to win the tournament.

Million Dollar Challenge
Wanted: a New Batch of Price Tags

Is there a Nick Price headline that hasn't been written yet? Beyond the ubiquitous Price Is Right, there's Paying the Price, What Price Glory? and Price Goes Low. Sun City punsters may have their work cut out for them when the Million Dollar Challenge returns to South Africa this weekend. Zimbabwe's Price (above), a two-time winner of the Challenge, will try to fend off the likes of David Duval, Ernie Els, Mark O'Meara, Jesper Parnevik (opting to play here instead of with Annika Sorenstam at the JCPenney), Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods. Davis Love III, who leads even Price as a subject of pun-loving headlines, is out with a bad back, leaving Sun City Loveless if not Priceless.
