?Baseball League Championship Series
ALCS GAME 3 FOX 4 PM; NLCS GAME 4 NBC 7:30 PM
If the leaves are turning and prominent college football players are being arrested, then it must be autumn, and that means the Braves are sure to be playing in the National League series. Atlanta will attempt to forestall its near-annual demise, in this case against the upstart Mets. If each series goes the limit, the National's ensuing games will be on NBC, concluding with Game 7 on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and the American's on Fox, concluding on Thursday at 8 p.m.
ESPN 1 PM
If Jeff Gordon, 28, is Wonderboy, then Dale Jarrett, 42, is NASCAR's Everyman, a down-home guy from Hickory, N.C., who connects with the average fan. Jarrett's struggles down the stretch this year in a quest to become the second-oldest first-time Winston Cup champion have only made it easier to root for him. His lead over second-place Bobby Labonte is a not insurmountable 222 points heading into today's race at the challenging Talladega Superspeedway.
? Nike Tour Championship
THE GOLF CHANNEL, FOX SPORTS NETWORK 1:30 PM
Caseys we love: Casey at the Bat, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Casey Martin. In this final tournament of the Nike tour season (the telecast continues Friday through Sunday on The Golf Channel and Fox Sports Network), Martin hopes to avoid the same kind of fate that claimed his eponymous brethren, who struck out and wound up on Behind the Music, respectively. The cart-riding Martin heads to Highland Oaks in Dothan, Ala., 12th on the Nike money list—with the top 15 earning a PGA Tour card for 2000.
? Naseem Hamed vs. Cesar Soto
HBO 8 PM
Hamed, the self-styled fresh Prince of boxing, is known for his leopard-print shorts and his (literally) over-the-top ring entrances—and for his talk. In the October issue of the glossy new magazine of that name, Hamed, from Sheffield, England, disses everyone from his former trainer, Brendan Ingle, to the Queen. But he is mum on Soto (53-7-2, 39 KOs), a scrapper from Mexico who will be making the first defense of his WBC belt. Along with his undefeated record (32-0, 29 KOs), expect Hamed to bring plenty of attitude to Detroit's Joe Louis Arena.
? Dolphins at Patriots
CBS 1 PM
Novelist Tom Clancy has a well-chronicled desire to become an NFL owner, and no wonder: His Jack Ryan, hero of Patriot Games, bears an uncanny resemblance to Drew Bledsoe (above), hero of recent Patriots games. In the book Ryan takes on a wily foe, IRA terrorist Sean Miller, while in this key AFC East matchup Bledsoe will have to deal with Miami's shrewd coach, Jimmy Johnson. Ryan improbably rescues a group of wayward soldiers; already in 1999 Bledsoe has engineered a pair of stirring fourth-quarter comebacks. Like pacifist Ryan, Bledsoe tries to avoid violence, and whether Miami's scrappy defense can get to him will be key to the plot.
ALL TIMES EASTERN. SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
