Ten years is mere prologue. David faces 40 felony charges in California and a maximum of 226 years. The years add up quickly because of his past difficulties and California's three-strikes law. "He will never get out of the penitentiary," predicts Andrea Freshwater, a deputy district attorney in San Diego.
The young man, the artist, told his father repeatedly that freedom was the most important thing in his life. Now he is left to ponder what his father told him in response: "Then don't ever let anyone take your freedom away."
