The Capitals are losing patience with 6'4", 234-pound wing Chris Simon, who is off to a poor start. Simon, an enforcer turned scorer (he had 29 goals two seasons ago), had only one goal in his first 17 games this year and lost three fights decisively. Even though Simon usually heats up in the second half of the season, bet that Washington trades him before then....

The Canucks, an unexpected playoff team in 2000-01, were only 7-11-1-0 through Sunday, in part because of their overly physical play. Vancouver had tried to intimidate teams early in games (at week's end the Canucks had eight fighting majors in the first period) and led the league in penalty minutes....

There's been much speculation that the Devils will trade free-agent-to-be Bobby Holik, but don't be surprised if New Jersey hangs on to the 6'4", 230-pound center. General manager Lou Lamoriello knows that to win in the physical Eastern Conference, a team needs two big centers. (The Devils also have 6'4", 220-pound Jason Arnott.) Watching Holik match up effectively against elite Maple Leafs center Mats Sundin in back-to-back games last week proved that New Jersey would be better off signing Holik to a contract extension than dealing him.
