Walton, 50, an animal-hospital manager, won the veteran combined women's foil at the North American Cup to earn a berth in the world championships. Her daughter, Kerry, 20, is a member of the U.S. junior world team, making them the first parent-and-child pair to represent the U.S. at the worlds.

Basketball
Santiago, a senior guard at Missouri Southern State College, broke the Division II career record for steals by adding five in an 83-81 loss to Pittsburg ( Kans.) State. His 10 assists against the Gorillas gave him a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic's Association-record 761, ninth best in division history.
Ann Patrice McDonough, COLORADO SPRINGS
Figure Skating
Ann, 16, landed a triple Lutz-double toe loop combination, a triple loop and four other triples in the free skating to win the gold medal at the world junior championships. The silver medalist at this event in 2001, she received seven of the nine first-place marks for her performance this year.
Scott Russell, WINDSOR, ONT.
Track and Field
Russell, a senior at Kansas, threw the weight a meet-record 80'11�" to win the NCAA title. A four-time All-America and three-time Big 12 champion, Russell broke the collegiate record in February with a throw of 81'11�", which was nearly three feet farther than the old mark, set in 1975.
Jack Smitheran, RIVERSIDE, CALIF.
Baseball
Smitheran, 58, the UC Riverside coach, earned his 1,000th career victory with a 9-5 win over San Diego. Inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame this year, he's 1,008-711-3 over his 33 years (885-650-3 in 29 seasons at Riverside), which includes two Division II championships.
Don Reynolds, FRANKFORT, ILL.
Wrestling
Don, a senior at Providence Catholic High in New Lenox, ran up a 49-0 mark in the 160-pound division to lead the Celtics to a record sixth consecutive Illinois Class AA title. He finished his career with four individual state medals, four team gold medals and a record of 179-10.
