Don't expect the same next winter—at least not if potential free agents Miguel Tejada, Bartolo Colon, Vladimir Guerrero, Randy Johnson, Kevin Millwood, Roberto Alomar and Juan Gonzalez are available....

A's general manager Billy Beane says he will soon begin trying to re-sign AL MVP Tejada to a long-term deal. But one team source said that the club most likely won't be able to afford both Tejada and third baseman Eric Chavez, who's eligible for free agency after the 2004 season....

The Cubs told one free-agent outfielder that they had interest in him, if they can trade 23-year-old centerfielder Corey Patterson, once the crown jewel of their system. In his first full season Patterson hit .253, struck out 142 times and drew only 19 walks....

Likewise, the Blue Jays are listening to offers for shortstop Felipe Lopez, 22, who lost his job to Chris Woodward, 26.
