A little more than a year after winning the Golden Spikes Award as the nation's best amateur player, Greene is the top prospect in the Padres organization and on the fast track to San Diego. A first-round draft pick out of Clemson in 2002, Greene has emerged as one of the most promising shortstops in the minors. He's a likely Sept. I call-up and could eventually supplant Ramon Vazquez in the Padres infield.
"He has tremendous instincts," general manager Kevin Towers says of Greene. "Defensively he flows toward the right spot. He might be among the best I've seen at being in the right place."
Greene is apparently just as advanced at the plate. After being promoted to Triple A Portland on June 9, the 5'11", 210-pound Key West native hit .307 with 10 homers and 43 RBIs in 62 games through Sunday.
