Nile Kinnick, Football player
A Phi Beta Kappa and the senior class president, the Hawkeyes' halfback took home the 1939 Heisman, Walter Camp and Maxwell trophies. He died when his Navy fighter plane crashed during a 1943 training flight; Iowa's football stadium is named for him.
Jay Berwanger, Football player
The Dubuque native was the first Heisman Trophy winner and played running back and linebacker at the University of Chicago from 1933 through '35. Berwanger was the top pick in the first NFL draft, in '36, but he chose to pursue a business career and never played in the pros.
Bob Feller, Baseball player
The Cleveland Indians' righthander from Van Meter won 266 games despite leaving baseball for four of his prime years to serve in World War II. Rapid Robert, whose fastball was clocked at 100 mph, led the AL in strikeouts seven times and threw three no-hitters and 12 one-hitters.
Roger Craig, Football player
The Davenport native helped the San Francisco 49ers win three Super Bowls. His 566 career receptions established a record for running backs, and in 1985 he became the first back to gain 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving. He was the 1988 NFL MVP.
Dan Gable, Wrestler
Gable went undefeated though high school in Waterloo and in college at Iowa State until losing his final match in 1970. An NCAA champion in 1968 and '69, he won a gold medal at the 72 Olympics. He coached Iowa to 15 NCAA team titles between 77 and '97.
Elmer Layden, Football player
One of Notre Dame's storied Four Horsemen, Layden, born in Davenport, was the hero of the 1925 Rose Bowl win over Stanford, which brought the Irish their first national title. He scored on a three-yard run and interception returns of 78 and 70 yards.
