When Ron Davis was finally traded from Minnesota to the Cubs, he said, "This is a new start—my ERA drops from nine-something to 0.00."
In his first National League inning, in Montreal, Davis gave up Tom Nieto's first homer since 1984. His ERA was back to 9.00.

The injury-riddled Athletics have had only one pitcher—Jose Rijo—active the entire season. They have recalled 10 pitchers from Tacoma: Bill Mooney-ham, Curt Young, Eric Plunk, Dave Stewart, Dave Von Ohlen, Doug Bair, Fernando Arroyo, Dave Leiper, Tom Dozier and Darrel Akerfelds. Arroyo had been released by the San Jose Bees.

Sparky Anderson says Dwight Lowry is "the best backup catcher in baseball." In spring training the Tigers were so down on Lowry that they asked him to be either a nonplaying coach at Nashville or a player-coach at Glens Falls.
Sparky also says, " Johnny Bench will never see the day he throws a baseball harder than Mike Heath."
