Carrie, 10, a fifth-grade runner, set a U.S. age-group record of 35:23 for the 10K while winning the women's division of a Los Angeles road race. The previous record was 37:29, established by Sarah Schwald of Mulkiltio, Wash., in 1983.
CRYSTAL RIVER, FLA.
Tom, a junior goalkeeper for the Crystal River High soccer team, set a state career record for saves with 443 in two seasons. This winter he averaged 10.89 saves per game. Tom is also an all-county kicker on the football team.
Tracy, a Killingly High junior point guard, broke by 237 the state girls' basketball career scoring record with 2,657 points. She averaged 42.5 points while leading the 22-2 Redgals to the Eastern Connecticut Conference title.
Brent, a 6-foot senior point guard at Enid High, scored 54 points in the Plainsmen's 96-90 overtime loss to Moore High to break the five-year-old school record (50) set by his brother Mark, now a guard with the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.
EAU CLAIRE, WIS.
Hamler, 19, and Hicks, 41, won 70-meter titles at the national ski jumping championships in Ishpeming, Mich. Hamler, who also won the 40-meter jump at the Junior Olympics in Ely, Minn., took the junior title by jumping 244 and 259 feet for a point total of 167.6, 12.1 points better than Rob Trudue of Canada. In the masters event Hicks, a golf pro, beat Greg Windsperger, the 35-year-old coach of the U.S. ski jumping team, with leaps of 247 and 239 feet for a 162.1 point total.
