About half his life ago, when he was 11 years old, Texas A & I tailback Johnny Bailey received as a Christmas gift a Dallas Cowboy uniform with Tony Dorsett's number 33 on it. Wearing that outfit, Bailey would hustle off to a playground near Houston's Cuney Homes, the inner-city housing project where he lived with his mother and two older brothers.

Ruby Ford discouraged her son's interest in football until, she says, she saw how it kept him "busy, tired and out of trouble. He always came home saying, 'Momma, I'm going to be just like Tony Dorsett.' Well, now he surely is."

Bailey grinned at the thought Saturday night. "I wouldn't say I was on top of the world out there tonight," he said, "But maybe I'm about halfway there."
